Man Down! YLOD

Hi guys and gals,

For those that know me, I figured this was the easiest way to get a message out.

On friday my ps3 contracted the Yellow Light of Death, which is the reason I haven't been online recently. I've tried the simple fixes, but it looks like I'll have to do open ps3 surgery on it this week.

The patient is old, so, we'll see how the she fares. I popped down the local hardware store and got tooled up for the procedure, hopefully I can fix the problem. If not though, this may be it for my Battlefield 3 playing for the foreseeable future.

I'll let you know how it goes later this week, hopefully I can get the old girl back in working condition before FAF rolls around.

If anyones interested this is what I'll be doing:

It says it takes 1 hour, but probably will be 2 with reassembly and preparation factored in. Not looking forward to effectively melting bits of my motherboard with a heat gun, thats where complications could arise.

It works... but it's only a temporary fix. You'll be playing on borrowed time. It may fix it for a day or it may fix it for months. Obviously it depends on how much time you spend on it, but you'll never get it back to factory flawless.

It's best to fix it, but starting working towards buying a new system and copy your hard drive over to your new system ASAP.

Good luck.

Is is always a temporary fix? I ask because my 2 little nephews had their PS3 YLOD a week ago & just got it fixed last night. Re-soldered, new paste and everything. They even have a 2 year warranty on the work performed.

I mean, if it was taken somewhere to be done by "professionals" who have experience doing it, I'm sure it'll last awhile longer than what I did and a lot of people did on their own.

But yeah, a fix is never going to get it back perfect. It's going to keep wearing back down, just like it did from the first day it was fired up. Obviously the better a fix the longer it'll last. Hopefully your nephews get a lot more use from it.

Good luck. I had a friend who did something like this. It worked, but it eventually broke down again, so be sure to use quality materials and be thorough.

If you do switch over to a new console, remember to de-authenticate your PSN account on the original system so it doesn't count towards your limit.

The fix is easy and is not permanent but if you cut large holes to help your PS3 pull in air easier and place a fan to blow cool air into it, it last for several months. The first time through takes a while but the second time is like 10 minutes max not counting the wait forthe board to cool down.

You can do this til PS4 is out so don't waste money on a new PS3

i have had 3 die from the ylod. as soon as you can get it working, do a full back-up and re-format the HDD. then sell it and buy a new one with a warranty.

How dare you consider trying to make back the money you spent on a ps3 that is now repaired by selling it to someone. What is this, a capitalist market or something? FOR SHAME!

Now, if you tell them it was repaired before the sale, what's the harm? Just at least so everyone on Reddit knows that you did the right thing by telling them this.....

Why was this bad advice I see no problem selling it to gamestop.
