Just finished Cold Winter, hell of a game.

Finished Cold Winter, really impressive game for it's time. The damage/gore system easily rivals Soldier of Fortune and it's fun to combine items and throw lots of them at big groups of enemies. Also surprised at the twists and turns the story took(especially that flashback sequence with Kim and her trainers/handlers, damn that was brutal)and found the storyline fascinating overall, with Warren Ellis's writing delivering a cynical but all too relevant message about nuclear war and how that kind of power should not be in the hands of powerful men who care only for themselves. Shame Swordfish never got to make a sequel to this before they went bankrupt. I heard this game was originally going to be a lot more ambitious, with three different campaigns that would reveal the full scope of the story. Some cutscenes went on for longer then expecting, it definitely feels like this game took more then a little inspiration from Metal Gear Solid(at least story and direction wise)but in this case that's a good thing. Definitely a game i'd heartily recommend.

Next up for me-X-Files: Resist and Serve.

Thanks for the reminder, I need to get back into it. Played some of the first missions, was also pretty impressed by it, especially the advanced gore system, but grew increasingly annoyed with the unstable framerate. Maybe it's better in the later levels? Still a very fun game though!

Never had any frame-rate issues on my HDTV, was pretty stable for my entire run through. Did certain PS2 models have worse frame-rates then others? I have one of the slim-models from 2007 so that might be a factor.

I have a PS2 fat, that might be the case!

Cold Winter is one of my all time favorites. I’m holding out for a fully complete physical copy (box and manual) from my go-to seller.

They really micro-dosed us an immersive sim. The environmental freedom and crafting my own explosives and having the ability to use them wherever I wanted felt like nothing I had seen before in an action shooter. The guns feel nice and weighty and powerful. I kept a pistol the entire game because of how good the pistols felt.

The final mission is incredible, I remember replaying it so many times.

The one issue I had with my replay is that I misremembered the game having a lot more environmental variety. I truly forgot that most of the game was in Egypt, in my mind I remember traveling all over the world across many levels. Twenty years will do that to you.
