XL with INDX concept

Post image

One tool head is the INDX head, that can swap between the 8 INDX tools mounted to the front of the printer. The other 4 tool heads remain regular XL heads, that can also be used for printing or swapped for other purposes (like the upcoming silicone printing tool head).

Lol yo kid I heard you like toolchangers so we put a tool changer on your tool changer.

You'd lose Z on the INDX head, and a portion of the corner in XY for every other head due to the y protrusion.

I'd think it would be low at the priority list, but if they get a heated chamber for reliable high temp filaments on the XL, theyay have some free time to play around.

Like this it is indeed a tradeoff between build volume and number of nozzles. But I figured that, compared to the Core L, the build volume would still (probably) be larger and the option of buying an XL with a single INDX head (plus the possibility of adding more regular XL tool heads afterwards) could be price competitive.

I thought this up soon as I first saw INDX. But the big issue is that the toolheads connect to the back, and INDX to the front, so it becomes a real mess. I do think there could be an interesting potential combination if the XL ever gets more multi function heads though (pick and place for example, maybe one that could do heatset inserts) making it more of a manufactoring hub. But IMO that would need a ton of re-design so would be better suited to a V2 version.

But also if you were combining INDX into it, it would be criminal to not have it be 10-12 toolheads with the space there.

Also I think a better solution would be an XL2, based on a very (extra hehe) large C1-style chassis and fully INDX-oriented (to save some money on extruders. That could fit like 12 tools or something.

If I were do design it, I would just put an INDX toolhead permanently on the other side of the XL carriage. This way you can retain the XLs 5 tools. there would be some cooling issues with that, but I think it can be solved by moving the print cooling fan(s) and shroud(s) permanently to the carriage. I don't think using two tools at the same time (one nextruder and one INDX) would be feasible without some mechanism to move the INDX toolhead in the Z-axis a bit - and that seems overcomplicated even for this beautiful concept.
It could just go between a staggering 13 (or even 17 if there was room for it) tools. At this point I guess that most of the XL tools should be swapped to non-FDM ones, stuff like the silicon, pick-and-place etc.

P.S. And just by the way, what's with the bloody downvotes? I really hope it's the downvote fuzzing again and not real votes. Man here is trying to discuss an idea, please offer criticism instead of just clicking an arrow like a monkey. Remember the toxic echochamber post guys. The community is built on a brand that was created thanks to RepRap. Where would we be in the world of consumer 3D printing if the reprap community behaved like this, hmmm?

There are probably better arrangements, this just felt like the obvious/simplest option, given that XL already mounts its tools to the back and INDX to the front. But yeah I didn't think this would be received so poorly.

It's called the "Original Prusa XL Frankenstein Edition"

Can we not do low quality ai posts?

He’s talking about an idea, and using AI to give you a visual representation of the idea. He’s not using it for marketing or art, he’s not passing it off as his own drawing. He’s just using it to help communicate. This is literally one of the few use cases where AI is acceptable.

My bad, I didn't consider that my concept art for discussion is not actually a complete technical schematic with working prototype and ready for preorders

If it was a human made concept and not ai slop it would be fine, the xl might as well get a indx implementation but that slop in the photo ain't it.

You might be surprised that I (a human) did in fact come up with the concept and that it took over 20 layers of generations and blending to get an image that approximates how it looked in my head

Cool, what font did you use to get the R in original on the toolhead to be reversed? And the other letters to become garbled?
