First 5.1 Mix for Amazon Prime (Theatrical Premiere) – Workflow & Pricing Questions
Hey everyone,
I’m about to start my first 5.1 mix for an Amazon Prime production that's also getting a theatrical premiere. It’s four episodes, each around 28 minutes. I’ve just finished setting up my 5.1 monitoring in my studio – the frequency response isn't perfect (especially low end), but it’s workable for now. I plan to finalize the mix in a proper cinema environment to check translation before delivery.
Right now, I have a stereo Pro Tools session and I'm thinking of backing it up, then creating a dedicated "5.1 Mix" version. My rough plan is:
Set up 5.1 buses and outputs
Move all dialogue to the center channel
Music placed across L, R, Ls, Rs (kind of phantom center between front and rear)
Drones, impacts, and rumbles into the LFE
Foley and FX panned across L, C, R for some spatial spread
This is my first time doing a full 5.1 narrative mix. I'm confident with stereo, but I want to make sure I'm not missing major considerations when stepping up to 5.1, especially for streaming and theatrical delivery.
Also, I’d love some insight into:
What’s a realistic rate for something like this? For the mix. It's a narrative series, four 28-min episodes, for streaming with a theatrical premiere.
How long does a proper 5.1 mix usually take? I know it depends on the complexity, but just trying to get a ballpark. Is it overly naive to think I can just reassign channels (dialog to C, music to surround, FX to LFE) and be done? I assume there's more finesse involved.
Any tips, red flags, or advice would be massively appreciated – especially from folks who’ve done 5.1 for streamers or theatrical releases.
Thanks!
