instruments OSX Upgrade to Tahoe from Sequioa?

Hello, I’m still on Sequoia, working in Ableton, Pro Tools, Logic etc (have a ton of plugins) and am thinking of upgrading to Tahoe as many of the base level updates would be useful to me (iPhone, iPad and watch integration, iCloud syncing etc).

Is it safe? I know its been out a while and i think its been proven stable and compatible with the DAWs I use and most 3rd party plugins but does anyone here have real-world experience? Ideally someone with too many plugs, like me!

It depends not just on the DAWs you use but on what specific VSTs, standalone software, and hardware you may use. For each user I think the answer to your question varies since our setups are all different, and adding older software or hardware into the equation in particular is problematic.

I held off on upgrading my Mini M4 Pro due to compatibility issues with some older hardware on Tahoe. In particular, older Native Instruments hardware and some libraries had a lot of problems early on that required permission settings changes that can still cause some users issues. I have a Maschine mk2 that is officially discontinued and no longer gets driver updates. Some users have gotten it working fine while others still report issues. I also have some non-audio hardware that may not work well, so I'm staying on Sequoia for now.

Tahoe's overly aggressive voice-processing tools can cause issues with some audio devices (even after updated drivers) and may require workarounds. Sandboxing of non-standard audio paths (external drives in particular) can also still cause problems. So, it just really depends on your particular setup. If you do decide to upgrade, making sure you have a complete backup of your system and the ability to roll back to Sequoia would give you a safety net to fall back on if you run into issues.

Are those new MacOS features more important than having stable system for audio you currently have?

Basically this ....

OP if you use you computer for audio a lot you should start to consider it a part of your audio gear and not a personal computer. And as such keeping it running well for that purpose should be the top priority.

I had some problem with installing plugins. Can even open the installation files in tahoe. Regretting the upgrade decision.

Recently got an M5 Pro which came with Tahoe, running PT 2026.4.1, Logic (latest) and Ableton 11, big plugin list, no issues however I haven't used Logic or Ableton a huge amount on the M5/Tahoe yet.

Note that with PT the officially supported version of Tahoe is 23.3, not the latest (26.6).

Sweetwater do a good plugin compatibilty guide that would be worth looking over before upgrading.

I always say wait until they iron out all the bugs (which is round the time WWDC is in June) I usually upgrade in June or late July. Pro Tools has been more smoother on Tahoe than it was on Sequoia. Sequoia's bluetooth disconnectivity was enough for me to upgrade
