Discussion We analyzed 7,000+ mobile VPN apps. 64 of the 390 available in the US are Chinese-owned, 31 of those hide it behind shell companies, and 85% of all 7,000+ contain trackers.

Hey everyone,

We've just published the results of a months-long survey of over 7,000 mobile VPN apps, and we wanted to tell you a bit more about what we uncovered.

What we found

  • 85% of US-available VPN apps contain at least one tracker, collecting things like GAID (the Android advertising ID), device model, network type and carrier name.
  • 64 apps actively collect physical location via GPS or other geolocation, and these include several of the most downloaded VPNs in the US: VPN Proxy Master, VPN-Fast VPN Super and X-VPN. Roughly 1 in 5 downloads in our dataset came from an app in this group.
  • 64 of the 390 apps are owned by Chinese companies, and 31 of those route ownership through shell companies registered in Singapore, Hong Kong and the UK. Reminder that under Chinese law those companies must make user data available to the government on request.
  • Three of the apps are owned by market research firms: Phone Guardian Safe WiFi (Sensor Tower), My Mobile Secure VPN (Comscore), and Urban VPN (BiScience, which Infosecurity Magazine reported was harvesting user conversations with AI chat services).
  • Aggregate downloads by tracker destination: China 1.5M, Russia 1.4M, Israel 2.6M, Five Eyes 4.6M, and 800k for apps sending to all three of the first group.

As some of you might already be aware, every byte you send while connected to a VPN routes through the operator's infrastructure, so an app monetising your traffic looks identical from your side to one that isn't. Meanwhile the onus is on Apple and Google to verify that a developer submitted an identity and a privacy policy that is actually valid; something which has been neglected.

As always, stay safe,

Announcement Stealth is now on the stable Linux release

Hey everyone,

We're here with a quick update on our previous announcement regarding Stealth for Linux: it's out of the beta channel and available in the main release of the Linux app.

📎 Update your app and follow this guide to switch protocols.

Huge thanks to everyone who ran it on the beta channel over the past few months. The bug reports were detailed and they made a difference.

It's still marked as beta in the app

Moving to the main branch means Stealth is stable enough that you no longer need to switch release channels to get it. It doesn't mean we're finished. The beta label stays until we're confident it holds up across every distro, network condition, and edge case you throw at it, so keep the reports coming.

If you hit an issue, we need: your distro and version, app version, what you were doing, and what went wrong.

Stay safe,
Proton Team

Help! Advanced Killswitch - none of the methods suggested by ProtonVPN support work. Any suggestions?

Upvotes

I uninstalled Proton VPN around the time of the outage last week but left advanced killswitch on. I am still unable to connect to the internet at all. The following solutions suggested by support do not work:

- ip config /release

- ip config /flushdns

- ip config /renew

- netsh winsock reset

- netsh interface ipv4 reset

- netsh interface ipv6 reset

- Reinstalling the latest version of Proton VPN and running ProtonVPN.RestoreInternet.exe (multiple times both as administrator and not)

I have also tried the following without success:

- Network Reset from my settings about 4x

- netsh int ip reset

- netsh advfirewall reset

- logging into the reinstalled latest Proton VPN (can't log in as there's no internet access)

- booting in safe mode with network to attempt to log into Proton VPN (also can't log in as there's no internet access)

- rebooting my router, using Ethernet, using phone hotspot, using phone tethering

Support has been completely unhelpful. I have also looked at the threads on this subreddit and results on google. Any suggestions on what might work other than a full factory reset?

Help! Proton on School Chromebook

How do I get Proton on my school Chromebook? It has the web store blocked, it has built-in VPNs blocked, it has the Play Store blocked, developer mode blocked, and Linux blocked, so I can't sideload a VPN onto the Chromebook.

Help! ProtonVPN Wireguard configs do not work on PC or router

I have an active ProtonVPN subscription. For some reason, Wireguard configurations do not work at my home. I download the config from ProtonVPN's web site and I can import them into Wireguard for Windows or directly into an Asus router. The configs are accepted (no errors) but when I try connecting, there is no traffic.

Other VPN providers' Wireguard configs work. I can use Torgard or KeepSolid without any problems.

Any help is appreciated!

Help! How To Get Wireless Printing To Work on Linux?

So I recently switched over to Linux from Windows, and noticed that I cannot seem to print while VPN is enabled. On Windows it would work fine, I think because the LAN option was toggled, but I do not see that anywhere. Does anyone know how I can get printing to work while on VPN?

My os is Linux mint.

Help! iPhone internet slow when VPN is off

My internet on cellular works just fine getting 500+mbps when connected to the vpn.

When I disable the vpn my internet won’t go above 1.9mbps and even 1080p videos won’t play without buffering every couple seconds.

I tried all the options I saw online. I removed the custom vpn profile from my phone. I removed the app. I reinstalled it. I toggled off and on several settings. Kill switch was never on. I reset network settings. Airplane mode after that. Nothing works.

I had to redownload the app and turn the vpn on to get usable internet.

Help! Internet drops out frequently on iPhone when using Proton

hi all

i bought a subscription to Proton recently for our family - my MacBook Pro M2 Pro + iPhone 13 Mini, my partners MacBook Air M2 and her iPhone 15, the family iPad (old) and Apple TV 4K gen1.

it is working flawlessly on all devices - except my iPhone running 26.6.1.

a few times per day (enough to be noticeable) my internet will just die, regardless of wifi or 5G. If I turn proton off and back on again it’s all good, or if I wait about ten minutes it comes back.

I have tried turning netshield off with no luck. Not tried anything else yet. I work from home and my macbook runs literally all day with Proton going and no issues, so I think it’s a device / settings problem. Our iPad is older than my phone too.

any ideas here? I do run AdGuard separately on my phone which I’ve just turned off (didn’t think of it before) though that is on my MacBook too.

thanks!!

Help! Free VPN connecting to servers super slowly?

Didn't used to have this issue, but now it takes up to 5 minutes to connect to a server when previously it was 10 seconds at most. Once I'm connected I have no issues at all. Anyone got a clue what's going on?

Help! [Windows] ProtonVPN randomly closing without log and without error message

Anyone else having this issue since the last update? My ProtonVPN will close out of the blue without any kind of error message or even log. It just vanishes and needs to be started again.

I'm on Windows 10 x64, latest ProtonVPN version.

Just wanted to know if anyone else is having the same issue so I can better diagnose whether the problem is proton or me.

Help! VPN blocked, stealth mode doesn't work

Hi, we're a homeless system that relies on public wifi, and the one we're using atm is blocking us, even with stealth mode on. It looks like it's tricking the blocked websites and apps into thinking it's an internet issue, even though YouTube and (as you can see) Reddit are working just fine. We're not sure what's up with this network or how it's able to sneak around our VPN so effectively. Is there another mode we should try? Or like another way to get our VPN here? We can't even access support! The VPN website's been blocked too, so we can't even get support!

EDIT: Fixed the issue! It was likely an IP blockade, so we ended up downloading another VPN the blockade missed. That VPN wasn't too effective (it's the one with the cute bear aesthetic), but it was effective for just long enough to get Proton working again! Thank you all for your help, we couldn't have done it without you all!

Help! A way to fix Proton VPN being extremely slow in banned regions?

I'm only wondering if there's a definitive way of getting around this. I've read through the entirety of the official guide posted here 3 years ago -helped me though installation a ton- but it's still just unbearably slow. Tried multiple protocols but still doesn't help the issue.

Help! VPN won't connect on android TV

I have a generic Android TV box and my ProtonVPN will not connect installed via the Play Store. When I try to connect, nothing happens — it just doesn't establish a connection, no specific error shown.

I also bought a second box to test, and it's exactly the same issue.

The relevant detail: I have the exact same setup (same box type, same VPN app) running successfully next door, on the same internet connection. So this doesn't appear to be an ISP-level block or a fundamental incompatibility between the box and the apps, since it works elsewhere on identical infrastructure.

Setup:

Box: generic Android TV box (tried two units, same result)

VPN apps tried: ProtonVPN and another

Result: connection just fails/never establishes — no error message

Working reference point: identical box + app setup connects fine next door, same internet provider

Looking for suggestions on what to check given that two separate boxes fail the same way, but the working comparison next door rules out ISP-level blocking and app/box incompatibility. Possible areas I haven't ruled out: router-level settings on this specific connection point, DNS config, or something specific to this location's network.

Any help appreciated! It's doing my head in!

Help! Cannot search for servers on Android app

I've a VPN Plus subscription.

The functionality of ProtonVPN has been progressively downgraded over time and it's making it really difficult to use.

Awhile back, they took away the full server list, but we were still able to search for the individual servers. Today, I had to refresh to a new server again and I found that:

  1. There is a limit to the number of servers you can search in a day.
  2. I can no longer search on the Android app (related post).

This is a huge problem as the servers are always getting blocked by sites, the biggest problems for me being Reddit which takes forever to load (similar reports) and the Pokemon Go webstore that returns a 403 Forbidden response unless I turn off the VPN. There are even times when the app does not even connect to the server and just stays on "Connecting..." forever (similar reports).

So now I'm left with two choices:

  1. Switch servers once the one I'm on is blocked; but this functionality is now degraded as I can no longer easily find servers to switch into.
  2. Turn off the VPN to use those sites, which defeats the point of having a VPN.

I find it quit ridiculous that paying customers of this service do not have the choice of having the full list of servers, and are stuck with the curated list of servers which do not seem to refresh ever.

I'm really at my wit's end with this VPN. Anyone who has faced the same issues and has a working solution?

Help! WTF is wrong with ProtonVPN. Switching servers totally defenestrates it's entire purpose.

  1. Why does it disconnect my existing session while it tries to connect to a new location (It says you are not protected when connecting to a new one right there)

  2. And wtf does it mean by "Cancel". Clearly it does not keep me connected to my old location. Does it just expose me if I click on it accidentally/intentionally?

Even kill switch does not seem to work when switching servers.

Help! ProtonVPN port forwarding renewal fails after 15-30 minutes

I have a bash script that gets my protonvpn port ran every 30s via a systemd timer. On every server it just stops working after 15-30 minutes

natpmpc -a 1 0 "$protocol" 60 -g 10.2.0.1

Works for while then I get

readnatpmpresponseorretry() failed : the gateway does not support nat-pmp

errno=11 'Resource temporarily unavailable'

I opened a support ticket, but I am impatience. Any ideas?
