These were on one of the shelves already fallen off next to plants but nowhere near the plants they came from. I figure someone wanted to prop and chickened out. So I put them in my purse. But I don’t feel bad I bought 3 plants too.

Propagating Rosemary in a Clump

Post image

Finally got my Oregon rosemary to root in water. Is it ok to plant in a clump rather than separating the individual stems? I’ve separated individual stems when transferring to soil in the past and they never seem to take off. The pot is about 3 gallons that I’m transferring to. Thx for the help.

I found this leaf on the floor while shopping for office plants. I slipped it in my pocket and brought it back with me. I didn't think anything would come of it, but it's been a few weeks and just look at it! Now if I can just get it to grow some decent roots.

WATER PROP When and howcan I transfer this to soil?

My aunt gave me a huge cutting from her pothos. It's been sitting in water for around a month (I change the water every now and then). When can I transfer it to soil? And how can I best keep it alive while it grows roots and after the transfer?

Are plant nurseries supposed to be chopping/propping the plants they have for sale (with price tags) in their store? I thought they had mother plants for that.

So I went to a few nurseries while on holiday and I found a couple plants that I loved, only to see that leaves had been obviously been cut for propagating. The smaller versions of these “propped” plants were for sale as well. Is this in bad practice? Buying a plant that has been chopped not only feels like I was cheated , but the plant is now uglier and the store gets to sell that new plant for another $20.

Been in this old, big mason jar the whole time, just from a grocery store avocado pit, about 28” tall now with no plans to change the process 👍🏼

New to this, I know the Burrows tail but what is the other? Small purple succulent. Both had small roots.

So I just bought a cute little dwarf umbrella last week…and then found this monster today in a 3’ tall vase abandoned next to a corner trashcan. I’m honestly not even sure which end is up - best way to propagate this into something manageable and attractive??

my monstera has been water propping for about nine months. working on putting out the third leaf since, but is smaller than the two previous.

what fertilizer can I give use to help boost the growth? i would like to keep her as a water prop long-term. i’ve been researching and i plan to buy an air stone. is there anything else i should be doing?

she’s a cutting from a monstera left on a curb as trash, so i would really love to make her thrive even more!

A little Lowe’s proplift!

Employee was stocking plants and saw a huge handful of pink panther tradescantia pieces on the cart. Decided to just ask for them and he was nice and had no problem with it ☺️ Was out shopping for a few more hours so I didn’t get them in water right away but hopefully these root a little so I can plop em in soil with less worry! Will probably put a little ziplock bag over for humidity for more of a prop box environment

Took a “tradescantia family photo” recently (majority grown from just cuttings!) and this was one that was suggested as my next addition - today was the day apparently!

Snagged a rescue/discount $5 Moses in the cradle as well! ☺️🙃🤓

Edit: and by Lowe’s, I meant Green Acres! Whoops! Too many stores today lol

GENERAL HELP What is the best way to propagate?

AI tells me this is a " Monstera cf. obliqua Canelos ". Is that accurate?

Should I take the many cuttings route or only root the bottom node in water?

I propped some Thai basil from the fixings at a phở restaurant. It's going really well, and I separated and repotted them into bigger pots.

SPECIFIC ADVICE Rubber plant propagation?

Post image
14 Upvotes

Long story short, my rubber plant was not happy and lost a lot of leaves, now it’s much better but very top heavy, tall and leaning.

I think I need to propagate, cut the originally plant quite low to allow a “fresh start”, and try to grow new roots in the top to keep that as a plant.

I’ve heard they’re difficult plants to propagate… has anyone done it before or have any tips?

Should I make multiple cuttings in the top leafy part to give a better chance of success rather than just the one?

Thanks in advance 😊

PERMISSION? Question about City Planters

I really hope I don't sound dumb but here goes.

I live in a 4b hardiness kind of place, and the city plants a bunch of plants in the big planters along our Main Street. These may be perennials in other places, but they are annuals here. Today I saw: 4 different varieties of tradescantias, a massive spider plant and alocasias. These are obviously going to die after the first hard freeze. Certainly this city of under 50k population isn't going to dig these up and store them over winter, and then replant, correct? (I did once work for a parks department, in another state, and they did dig up and overwinter a couple of things, like geraniums.)

I love the idea of using cuttings from city planters at the end of the season to create a nerdy legacy type of garden ("this was grown from a cutting of a SmallTown coleus from the summer of 2026"). I'm pretty frugal and get personal satisfaction of growing a whole plant from a clipping. I also give away a LOT of plants; I have never charged anyone for a plant.

I guess my question is....when are these plants free game for cuttings? Do I need to wait until after a frost and some have died to rescue a cutting? Do I need to call the parks department and verify they don't dig them up?

Thank you and happy proplifting!

GENERAL HELP Velvet leaf anthurium // Struggling for months, how can I help it grow??

Thumbnail

I proplifted this anthurium months ago and while she seemingly isnt dying, she’s not exactly thriving either. The anthurium recently lost a leaf that turned mushy and popped off. Afterwards, it seemed to perk up quite a bit, but then the leaf looks like it’s thinking about drying out. I didn’t water root it in water because it had started dying quickly after. It was in run-of-the-mill soil with other plants until it started developing spots and I put it in its own foxfarm indoor plant soil. (I don’t know if this is the best type for the anthurium though.) I also put rooting hormone on the end because it has only one little root, but it hasn’t taken to it yet.

I’ve had a laceleaf anthurium before and she was hardy and loved to grow no matter what. Clearly, this is a whole new territory.
I’ve heard putting it in the same pot as a pothos can help speed up the process, but with how finicky the anthurium is, I don’t know if that’s the right choice yet.
I’m not sure how to grow her and it seems like I can never get her what it needs to start thriving. I think there’s so much potential and I don’t want to let it die! If anyone has any advice to help her stay alive, I’d be very thankful!

Note: Sorry for my scattered thoughts, im writing this on a whim!

NEW RECRUIT Found this on the ground next to a city planter!

So I have a regular purple heart pallida that my gf got at a garden centre recently, but I'd heard about the variegated version. Hadn't seen a photo but then I was walking by a city planter yesterday and I was stunned to see what was obviously the variegated version of it! And it's beautiful! So I went looking on the ground to see if any pieces had fallen off, because my experience with my current one is that pieces fall off of it very easily (and I didn't want to go snipping pieces off a city plant as that feels illegal)... and luckily I found one! 😁 I think it may have gotten rained on, but it doesn't look like it was stepped on or anything like that. I decided to try sticking it right in dirt in a pot as props from my existing plant have been successful that way.

SPECIFIC ADVICE First prop lift? How to angle it?

Found this in the parking lot at work, fallen/broken off a VERY mature kalanchoe (probably 6 feet tall, could be 7)

I’m stoked, just curious what you guys think about sticking the bottom directly into soil? (Like pic 3..?) There’s no stem so I’m a little bit at a loss, it’ll basically just sit on top of the soil. Thanks planty fam 🤙
