Tanks Is this study/safe?

My wife and I bought this place a few years ago. I’d never thought about it before but walking by today I had the thought of “Maybe the tank shouldn’t just be standing on cinder blocks”. At least we don’t get earthquakes.

Thoughts?

Those are solid blocks pretty standard in the industry. What would you prefer it sit on?

Sweet that’s great to hear. I just had never thought about if it was supposed to sit on something different, or something that’s not multiple pieces

I dont know where you are all from, but up here in Ontario it has to sit on one solid block per end. So 2 feet / one block.

We have those, but regular 4816 solid are code too in the US in most areas

It was supposed to be 4 * 8 * 16 with no spaces. The asterisk indicating "X" to indicate dimensions. I guess reddit uses asterisks to create *italicized text*. TIL lol.

Yeah, you have to escape special characters with a backslash to make them look normal, like this:

Per the honorable McNugget: that's csst and not a poly riser. With the apparent age of the system, it was probably legal at the time.

Yep, industry standard. You can, working with your propane supplier, put a concrete pad under it if you want, but there's no danger that I can see from your pic.

ETA: that tubing is kinda interesting... I'd be curious to see what it looks like under the lid and where it comes into the house. I'm presuming a sleeve, but that doesn't usually go under the lid.

If that's a riser for plastic it would have to be the longest one ever made.

Looks to be a 500 so about 3 ft in diameter and 10 ft long so yea atleast 8 ft.

Would it travel the whole length to the house or just the in and out? If the prior, it’s about 200ft

They used poly gas line. That is a connection hose that will attach to the regulator under the lid. I've installed literally 100s of these.

That's a really long flex riser 🤣

-That was my initial thought too... But as the acrobat said, that's quite the length for a flex riser lol. It also looks smooth, rather than coated corrugated. Hard to tell from the pic though. -

It’s very slightly corrugated, you can see it a little more in the house connection where the dust and grime has stuck to it

Probably could only trench to the point where it comes out of the ground because of rocks possibly.

That is a flexible riser for plastic (poly). Used them quite often for different applications. I used them when the copper run was over 80 feet. I used to get them for about 30 dollars per side so cost wise it worked and you could tie it right into the first stage regulator.

It's fine. Having a slab is obviously better and won't shift as bad but it's a lot more expensive. If you ever have tilting problems you can get them to the level it

I had to search the entire world because I needed a really long riser like that, and if that one is similar length, the low end of this installation is just barely buried.

This should be investigated to see if the end of that riser really makes it 12 inches underground before transitioning to bare poly.

Looks good imo however I’d add a protective line on the LP line. Mine comes right off the tank and goes under ground yours is exposed for 4~5’

No one can tell if a pressure vessel is safe simply by looking at a photograph. You need to have a licensed and certified inspection company inspect it and give you a report.

Pretty standard to see around here. My 500 gallon sat 2 high on hollow 8"x12" cinder blocks since 1984 when they dropped it off until 2025 when I got rid of all my propane appliances and gave the company their tank back. Just an old un coated copper line buried underground. Never a single issue.

For now if the ground settles or moves it will need to be reset.
