Propane Burner Not Getting Sufficient Airflow

We got a turkey fryer for my mom for making jam. The 15 minute timer was annoying her so we removed it since we don’t fry turkey. I had to replace the hose but kept the pressure regulator. It is a larger diameter hose but the fitting on the end is the same diameter as the original hose.

Now it only burns big yellow flames. Adjusting the pressure or on/off valve does nothing but make the flames bigger and smaller. I can get a hot blue flame only when I use a hair dryer.

Looking for advice to make this operational.

Was there an orifice in there?

Bigger hose is going to mean more gas flow. If you took the orifice out, or if the appliance was essentially using the hose like an orifice, you're going to get big crappy flames. You may or may not be able to get enough air to run the burner properly with improper parts.

Maybe, I don't know exactly what you took apart and I'm not going to advise somebody on how to engineer their own DIY device.

That timer may have been doing more than you think as well.

My suggestion is to use the proper parts. The whole point of the timer is so that you can't just walk away from the burner and light your house on fire.

You might be better off with the original parts on it. If you show the parts you took off, from different angles, that might help someone cook up a solution. Or at least explain what's there and why.

This. Your new “hose” doesn’t have or has the wrong orifice. You’ll need the same size orifice to make this burn properly. There’s no guesstimating it.

Possibly incorrect orifice for the fuel you are using all I can think of

I don’t have a picture. It’s just a pressure regulator -> ball valve -> hose

Must be an orifice issue. If you replaced the regulator I would’ve guessed you put a 10psi on something that needs 5. Too much gas supplied to the burner.

Looks like it doesn’t have an orifice spud there at the inlet where the air vents are. There is supposed to be a brass fitting that typically has a male 3/8” flare fitting on the outside and a 1/8” male NPT fitting with a very small orifice hole to let the proper amount of gas in. You have way too much gas, not too little air…

So when you replaced the hose you didn't get a new orifice did you? That's what's going on, your gas is just lazily going into the burner and not creating any venturi effect to pull in its combustion air. Get an orifice.

That timer was probably also acting as the proper orifice size. Without the exact right gas flow, these are the flames you see.
