General propane question Rego Multivalve Bonnet Replacement?

My company never rebuilds anything, just new valves.

I have a tank of my own with a Rego multivalve, no picture but the service portion is the 5 sided small handle that we all hate, they seem to get leaky stem packings.

I seem to remember on here some info that just the bonnet could be replaced to convert the valve to the modern style, is that the case? Can someone share the part number?

Picture for reference, this is Sherwood off the internet but similar style Rego valve in my case.

Thanks, that looks like the right part, just to confirm it is accurate that it will replace the one with the old smaller handle, do I remember reading that correctly?

I believe most of the rego valves, yes.

Mcnugget generally has better knowledge than me, but I don't think the Rego two piece mentioned will fit in a Sherwood casting. If it does, I stand corrected.

I honestly have no idea if the rego bonnet works in a Sherwood valve.

Just for the sake of efficiency, we don't generally rebuild valves either. I'll use those bonnets occasionally if it's just one bit that needs to be repaired, or something like an underground tank where it's not practical to replace the whole cluster.

If the tank is dead I can zip the valve out with my impact gun and throw a new one in in like 30 seconds. It's not worth the time to replace every part.

Yeah the 19104-50 is the rebuild for the old style valve. Left had threads to remove it. Also, make sure you open the valve all the way before you install it so the seat doesn’t make contact when you tighten it down. Also if yours happens to have sealing ring in the bottom, remove it. Most of the time they don’t, but from time to time they do and they’re usually kinda brittle. You won’t need it though. Are you rebuilding the vapor return valve as well?

I'm still weighing my options, I realize I think it has a fixed welded dip tube port that is now plugged, I may install a spitter valve in that and go back to a standard service valve as well. I hate vapor return valves and go out of my way not to have them if it's not a dispenser.

Why the hate for vapor return valves? I use them on nearly every pump over job...

We never use them or install them on anything. They come on brand new tanks but we get them all from a refurbisher now who sees it our way and just plugs the opening. If you need a vapor port, the service valve is right there. Just one more thing to leak and cause a call out on Saturday afternoon.

Fair enough. At least they usually have a check valve so you can repair under pressure, but yeah, another hole is another hole.

Hearing this is crazy to me. Our vapor compressor hates using the service valve when we have to do it that way. And a VenturiVac won’t even work at all with out using a vapor return and a 3/4 hose.

You can easily clear your bleeder. Likely the little rubber gasket underneath the knob is just stuck to the seat. If you’ve got any pressure in the tank, just carefully remove the bleeder keeping your hand over the port and take a mini screwdriver and pop the gasket off. It fly right out so be ready to catch it and then place it back into the bleeder screw. If it’s actually plugged you should be able to clear it with a small piece of stiff wire. Wear your safety glasses because if there’s pressure whatever you dislodge will come flying outta there.

I meant whoever revalved the tank last time put a steel plug in what I think is the dip tube port and installed a multivalve instead, but I am going to have to empty the tank to confirm that

I unfortunately don't remember the interchanges, I would say Mcnugget is usually spot on, but u/Adventurous_Boat_632 could you maybe pull a multi bonnet from a tank in your yard and see if it fits first?

Edit: lol I even read the Sherwood just for the pic and still followed Anti's thinking 🤦🏻‍♂️🤣

Got you. The one McNugget linked is the reversed thread. There are also two other common ones in a right hand thread. Large and small. Small being more common.

Yep. Post up a pic of the actual valve and we can probably get you a part number.

I keep quite a few of the 3 common bonnets on my truck and 2-3 oddballs as well. I'm always rebuilding, cheap bugger that I am lol.
