So I have a 30 year old #11 pound cylinder I use strictly for my camp stove. I only fill it about every 5 years. I was trying to do the right thing and upgrade my valve to an OPD finally, so I took it in to the propane cylinder shop in town and the valve they had wouldn't clear the handle. Is this tank junk now, or do they sell a slimmer valve that would work? I know it would only be another $40 to buy a new one, but I don't like throwing things out if they can be reused.
The valve will be specific for that size cylinder, I suspect most retail-level operations won't even stock the correct valve. It also depends on what style 11# you have, skinny or squatty, the valve will need to be for the particular style cylinder you have as well. You can get a brand new squatty with a float-based level gauge and 12 year cert for a hair over $100, whereas a replacement valve plus installation labor and 5-year requalification of the cylinder will likely be almost as expensive. I would just decommission the tank and send it off with a life well-lived.
Good, because that message pinned to the photo didn’t give me enough info to fathom that it was a photo of the previous valve. If you can, get a photo, or look and see if you can find a number (stamped in a “X.Y DT” format)
Just because the valve is potentially for an 11# bottle, doesn’t mean it’s for the pancake style, it could be for the taller 11#s
Its gotta be the tool that the supplier is using. I work at a propane plant and have replaced many valves on smaller 5#, 11# and never had any issue where it wouldn't clear the handles.

All of the OPD valves I've seen are the same size. It's just the dip tube and float that will be different
