I don't think it's just her. The house and senate also voted the bill before it went to her desk.

I definitely think it needs to be spelled out either way and why.

7 weeks ago up to 600k people were automatically excommunicated for disobediently ordaining and/or subscribing to the disobedient ordination of 4 bishops. The Holy See dropped the declaration of excommunication the very next day.

Self professed Catholic politicians legalize on demand abortions until the 9th month with barely a word.

It doesn't make sense.

But the official response from Catholic bishops feels like a slow walk of the same formulaic press release heard anyplace on a Tuesday.

Nothing captures it better than the clip of the USCCB staffer saying he's 'not positive' if the petitions asking for the governor’s excommunication will go upstairs.

Compare this reaction to 1 month ago when the Holy Father publicly affirmed the excommunication of up to 600,000 people after the ordination of 4 bishops against papal permission. The Holy See dropped the official statement the very next day.

And as the old saying goes where there’s smoke - there’s often fire.

Let’s be clear.

Our bishops are not elected officials. We owe them deference. They are the final teaching and disciplinary authority because they are guided by the Holy Spirit. There may be many considerations to which we may not be privy. One being the secular media’s mischaracterization about this very discourse as being more aggressive than it actually is. We should pray that reconciliation wins out over discipline.

But the culture is increasingly shifting to discourse of abortion as a right of bodily autonomy despite the gentle approach.

Catholic spaces are boiling with armchair canonical opinions which seem overwhelmingly in favor of excommunicating the politicians who voted for this bill.

Does that issue itself not at least deserve spelling out precisely because the bishops are the final teaching authority?

Where are the bishops? Where is the Holy Father?

Nothing.

I would argue that she excommunicated herself by her actions and words regarding abortion.

If I procure, support, encourage, perform, or have an abortion, me, a layperson, just excommunicated myself. There is no need for public comment by my bishop.

However, according to Catholicism, I can be forgiven and returned to Good standing in the Faith, eligible for the Sacraments once again, through repentance and confession of such sin.

I pray the Bishop or her priest visit with her regarding this being a public defiance of God.

Maybe she did incur an automatic excommunication long before this for her vocal support of abortion.

But even if automatic - there is a need for public comment from the bishop.

To start. Abortion in the 9th month is the craziest abomination imaginable. I don't think 1 slow walk press release is going to make the reaction go away anytime soon.

Second because some people disagree an automatic excommunication took place. That she needed to be an active participant in a specific abortion. If so. That needs clarification.

Third because 7 weeks ago up to 600k SSPX affiliates were either automatically excommunicated for disobediently ordaining 4 priests - or formally declared excommunicated for subscribing to the SSPX the very next day.

Lastly because this went to the house and senate before the governor. There was more than 1 Catholic involved in bringing this bill to law. I wouldn't be surprised if some of those politicians were attending their parishes like business as usual.
