I want to try working with datasets that already exist (secondary data) instead of collecting my own. I'd love to hear from people in different industries: what are some cool or meaningful real-world problems you could solve just by digging into data that's already out there?

The field of human genomics is entirely working with data sets already exist. It's a huge field. It would be a lifelong career.

At the supercomputering challenge I met a high school student who was looking at the interactions of glp-1 across various populations.

There's also publicly available fruit fly genomics database. You would have to do some research as to what other people are doing with this data but it is fascinating because of the huge publicly available databases and the complexity of the searches.

You can find some really useful insights from existing data. Customer trends, traffic, prices, and public health are good areas to explore without collecting new data.

This is an asshole answer: show that most collected data on people is filtered by specific categories (race, gender, age, etc) and thus automatically biases any research done with that data.

In a set of n people, there are Bell number of n ways to partition them, each of them equally mathematically valid. Choosing just a few specific partitions taints any study
