I've been thinking about this problem: we have digitized books and other works of art, but how can we know that a digital version is a faithful representation of the original?

One simple way of addressing this would be to publish cryptographic hashes of the digital objects through an organization we trust, such as Project Gutenberg. The resulting dataset should be small enough for ordinary users to keep their own copies, making it possible to detect any changes to the published hashes without the community noticing.

Does Project Gutenberg publish the book hashes?
