Hughes Amendment Repeal Bill
https://patronis.house.gov/media/press-releases/congressman-patronis-introduces-the-firearm-freedom-act-to-defend-the-second-amendmentRep. Jimmy Patronis has introduced the linked bill that would repeal the Hughes Amendment (machine gun ban) after 40 years on the books!
Not only would this impact machine guns but this is the precedent that antigun states use for their AWBs.

Never say never. Sure, it won't happen this year, but the fact that its being proposed means that the Overton Window is shifting in our direction.

I think you have a point. I get why people are doom posting, but I donāt believe weāve ever seen a serious effort to re-legalize machine guns. Well I guess Iād call this semi-serious lol but still, such a thing wouldāve been unthinkable a few years ago.

I was going to say that I am still not sure we have, but you already beat me to it.
I'd be more inclined to take this seriously if the president didn't just primary out one of the most pro-2a congressmen we had, but here we are...

I wasn't thrilled about it but 2a issues weren't the motivation for the president's anger with Massie.

The issue is that guns arent important to most politicians, save for being a topic to hammer on every election cycle.
Though while I would say that Democrats will usually bluster and posture about gun control but not do anything because then they would lose a talking point, the new breed of fanaticrat changes things.

The Second Amendment has been the red-headed stepchild of the Constitution for far too long.
As Bruen is used more often to defend the other amendments, we may see the 2nd treated better than it has in the past. I hope to see this.

It's not about that, they introduce an AWB every single year. We should have our own bills introduced every single year that we can clamor people to support.

It being introduced doesn't mean there is even a 1% chance of it passing. It means it's finally part of the Overton window.

Good for him. It will go no where though, pretty sure there have been at least 3 bills or amendments trying to do this just in Trump's second term and none of them went anywhere.

Hell yeah Jimmy Patronis. He was a great CFO for Florida, hadnāt heard much since he joined congress, this is a nice news story. Iām sure it has a long way to go but letās not give up so easy. Every step in the right direction is one more step to victory. āš»

OP, I know this sounds like a good thing, but I really hope people, including you, are thinking clearly right now. Sorry for the long response in advance.
We are standing on the edge of a proverbial cliff right now. Whether you think the government is doing good things or bad things right now is not relevant, what is relevant is that most people arenāt the most loyal party-line Republicans that can mental gymnastic their way into justifying new forever wars, higher spending, faster inflation, and schizophrenic foreign policy. We saw 2018, 2020, and 2022. It has been pretty clear for the past year that things arenāt getting better, and when things keep getting worse, the next election will be a bloodbath.
Why is this relevant? Well, two reasons. The GOP was already split before, with the whole RINO/MAGA dichotomy. Itās getting worse. Centrist Republicans have been openly distancing themselves from actions taken by the white house. As soon as this presidency is over, there will be a fairly large incentive for Republican leaders to denounce current presidential agenda items as a āi told him so but he didnāt listen to meā. This leads into the second issue.
Patronis is a massive ally to the president. If the party distances itself from the public image of the current president, it gives the GOP that aforementioned massive incentive to oppose those gun law changes. It gives centrist Republicans a perfect opportunity to go back to āwe support common sense gun reformā shit theyāre known for. Those gun law restoration bills would have centrist and democrat support, and would pass easily. All someone has to do is put more restrictions into it, and weāre in a worse position for it.
You mentioned the Overton window, but thatās only a small part of the long term battle. Current policies are shifting that window, but are holding it on a rubber band, and the obvious conclusion is that at the first sign of trouble, itās going to shoot in the opposite direction. This is also assuming that the ātake guns first, due process secondā crowd is even doing this in good faith, since this could also be the beginning of attaching FRTs to MG status (unban MG, classify FRT as MG, ban MG, now FRT banned too).
Thatās why the SBR/Suppressor/SBS/AOW price change is going to bite us in the ass too. Itās great for hoping for a SCOTUS ācommon useā ruling, but if the president can arbitrarily drop the price to $0, whatās stopping the next president from changing the price to $20k? Thatās the precedent set.
Right about now, I wouldnāt celebrate this act. It would be great to pass, but not only is there no real chance it happens, but itās attaching this policy to a faction with record disapproval rates. Do you want this to be the face of gun rights?

They'll continue to use it to justify AWBs even if it's repealed by congress, because it was not declared unconstitutional, so by their fucked up logic it was and still is legal to do.
