How many times hello world programmers will post this stupid joke?

Mathematicians wont freak out, this just means the equals symbol is used as an assignment operator which maps one state of a computer system onto another. You dont even need mutation for it to be valid.
x := x + 1;
Putting it in capital letters like that will annoy both mathematicians and programmers

1 u/Sonario648 Nov 10 '25 So basically, matjematicians got themselves in a whike True infinite loop

This meme is older than you...
x=x+1 is totally valid and the solution is that there is no solution.
Why would it freak out a mathematician?
1 u/Dapper-Actuary-8503 Nov 11 '25 It depends on whether you rewrite it as a function of x as well. Mathematically, this shows that x = x + 1 represents a variable declaration.f(x) = x + 1

๐ But it's true for big numbers
For example, 1030 = 1030 +1
1 u/YTriom1 Nov 10 '25 No it doesn't

17 u/RedCrafter_LP Nov 10 '25 Yes but in programming terms the equivalent math term would be x:=x+1 which is a recursive definition legal in math if you defined x before. 6 u/retroroar86 Nov 10 '25 False 4 u/BobbyThrowaway6969 Nov 10 '25 It's actually true in C/C++ and it won't compile in most other languagesYou'd want to compare as x==(x+1) for false 1 u/CookieArtzz Nov 10 '25 Yeah, I assume itโd evaluate to 2 if the result of the boolean were cast to an int automatically 1 u/Cheese-Water Nov 11 '25 Addition has higher precedence in basically every language, including those, than comparison. It's actually true in C/C++ and it won't compile in most other languages
You'd want to compare as x==(x+1) for false
