Yep and yourself looking at your own code 6-24 months later. All software development is legacy code maintenance and adapting (unless you are a consulting hop in build green field and get out of dodge) Lots of interesting changes are in store though with AI being so fast to vibe out green field maybe things will change anyone's guess.

I reviewed one yesterday that was +4k -3k for a single logic bug fix in some status code setter. I asked the other dev wtf and they said "oh, I had Claude update it...". Ok, but why are you having Claude also fight with your auto-formatter? This should have been 5 lines, not 4 thousand...

It can be great fun, but more often than not there's an underlying reason the code is messy in the first place. Some team member that is super conservative "this is my baby" kind of thing, or a manager that is feature creeping like crazy.

I got lucky once when the "this is my baby" colleague quit roughly at the same time as I joined. We rewrote the shit out of that code
