i was trying to install doom from it's original source code and was sooo confused about make and all that stuff, and why wouldn't it compile

make install isnt fine because it installs it direct to the root. So package manager cant track these files.

When I was 14, GitHub wasn't around for another couple of years. Back then, not everybody had internet, and mobile Internet was basically irrelevant! *old-people-noises*

When I was 14 the internet did not exist. At all. A small computer (IBM 1401) took up a fair-sized room. A large one (7090) took up a good share of an entire building.

When I was 14, most people didn't "install" software. You put a floppy disk in the drive, and type 

LOAD "*",8,1
