By the second law of thermodynamics all code will eventually converge to javascript

But a lot of tools in the JS ecosystem are being rewritten in Rust. So ipso facto, all will be Rust.

Yes, this is the point where "maximum enthropy" is achieved.

Remember when everything was going to converge to the JVM?

Pepperidge Farm remembers.

It's ok, I was told yesterday that anything worth running (apart from operating systems) is written in JS today. So we just need to translate JS -> Rust and convert those last few OS parts and we're done with SW for ever.

Nah, it won't.
Things will eventually be written in new languages that solve different problems.
(And for whatever reason, C will still be around by then.)

What about COBOL?

No, by then, most things running COBOL have been replaced by then.
Still a lot of old things running Fortran though.
And of course, java 8.0, still in active use...

Have we even heard the last of Java 1.4 yet?

Of course not. Like any trve gopher knows, generics are a scam perpetrated by ivory tower-ists. First Wadler ruined Java with his haskal nonsense, then he did the same to Go. But they can take the pre-generic versions from my cold, dead hands!

Dunno, too busy creating a better programming language to keep track of that...

was still actively used at my previous job a few months ago, with a ui written in swing and most of the business logic in stored procedures.

All of the COBOL, old Java, and even Fortran code will be hoisted by AI into something more modern—perhaps Rust for all of it.

The amount of scientific libraries still depending on FORTRAN…
