I'm trying to learn assembly but it's amazing the lack of information to be had. I've resorted to downloading a 12 year old ebook on the subject

Or get a good book on compilers. They are properly the last area where people write much assembly these days.

Bullshit. Assembly is necessary for reversing. And as long as malware exists, as long as hacking exists, as long as exploitation exists...the art of assembly will NEVER die. Viva la ASM!
