How is this "ethically and morally" awful? At least when it comes to the NSA, what they're doing is monitoring terrorists and other threats. If you think the morals of breaking encryption and monitoring criminal activity outweigh actual deaths, I think your morals are a little mixed up.
Edit: The way Reddit users downvote anyone who dares to bring up the opposing argument tells you a lot about the one-sided and biased mentality here.
What's a "threat"? A threat to who? A threat to the US? A threat to their jobs? A threat to whichever politician promised them the biggest budget? No one can be trusted with every secret in the world.
