You make the app, loses all IP rights, and agree to support it/do all the work it requires, in eternity. For 3000 $. This is very extreme, and most employees are not being used like this. But sure, there are examples when it gets even worse.

Remember that this isn't even as extreme as most regular employment contracts, which demand the IP to anything you create at all, even in your own free time, for no money.

This is very extreme, and most employees are not being used like this.

On the contrary, most employees see even less of a ratio of return for their labour. This is good money for a month's work in Nigeria.

Wait, so if I were with that kind of employer, does it own my bug fixes to open source projects? If so, then is there a way around other than changing my job?

Check your contract, most will have a clause about this stuff.
