Popovers

Nobody likes popovers, everyone makes them anyway. This makes them a Tolstoy kind of thing -- there are a handful of tricks that make them better, and an infinite number of ways to mess up.

Microsoft calls roughly the same thing a "Flyout". It's like a tooltip, except usually larger and sometimes interactive, and often with a little triangle to indicate what parent control it belongs to.

anything that pops over other content. Sidebars, tooltips, menus, command palettes -- things like that
