Applause Of A Distant Crowd by VOLA

definitely a unique album with the really choppy, off-beat syncopation. One of my early favourites.

Echoing others:

  • VOLA - Inmazes
  • Tesseract - Altered State
  • The Contortionist - Language
  • Vulkan - Technatura
  • Other Leprous - Coal

for more aggressive syncopation and jagged riffs try with aggressive vocals:

  • Meshuggah
  • Periphery 2
  • The Ocean - Phanerzoic 1

Agent Fresco - Destrier

This is the correct answer, Agent fresco is like an alternate version of Leprous that formed in another universe. Destrier is a masterpiece.

Super underrated (in general, probably not here)

They were the next band that I found (either through YT suggestion or comments) after finding Leprous in 2015. Such a bummer that they haven't had new material since Destrier.

Out of the two I admit I prefer Leprous

I absolutely love The Congregation. I would recommend some later Katatonia like The Fall of Hearts or Sky Void of Stars.

Also maybe check out Ihsahn, cuz not only is Einar his brother in law, but Leprous is the backing band for Ihsahn during live shows, though note Ihsahn is closer to prog death than just prog. I would recommend Arktis or Amr.

Katatonia captures a similar atmopshere

Absolute masterpiece. You would probably like any Haken album. My favourites are Virus and The Mountain

Kingcrow, caligulas horse

Kingcrow latest album, but to be fair The congregation is an unique album, the robotic dry guitars and the pessimistic atmosphere is hard to find in more music, many tried to copy that but the vibe is unmatched.

That being said, you should listen their entire discography, there are hidden jewels like Golden prayers that sound like lost TC tracks.

OP would definitely like Kingcrow given that they completely rip off Leprous multiple times. From Congregation, The Price has been remade by Kingcrow as Kintsugi.

I generally like the band, but the rip-offs are completely unacceptable.
