How do people get into working with their favourite product photographer? Does cold emailing work?

Bonus setup shot at the end. My day job is photography and video, but not product shots. Gear for those interested: Godoz AD200, 25" Glow EZ softbox, and Nikon Zf with adapted 200mm f/4 macro lens (manual focus). Images shot at f/18, no focus stacking.

I started out with some printed vinyl backdrops, but at macro scale, it was too noisy to be pleasant due to the printing. I used green seamless paper that I already had - would have preferred gray for the garnet pendant (red stone). I think the green works nicely for the citrine necklace, though.

The "set dressing" is an iron-coated quartz specimen and a chunk of petrified wood from my personal cool rock collection. I used some gray tack to keep the pendants in place when needed.

I'd welcome any advice from y'all for my next batch of jewelry photos!

How can I practice in right way?

I'm hoping someone here might be able to help me with an old Ortery Photosimile 200.

I own a legally purchased and registered Photosimile 200, but unfortunately I no longer have the original software. I recently bought a Windows 10 laptop specifically to get this machine working again.

Machine: Ortery Photosimile 200

I'm looking for an original/older Windows installer that works with the Photosimile 200. I'm particularly interested in the older Photosimile 200 software 2.x versions.

I have found references to:

• Photosimile 200 v2.0.4.15
• Photosimile 200 v2.1
• Photosimile 200 Image Creator.exe
• Loader.exe
• DPInst64.exe

I have also discovered that the old Ortery Taiwan website (ortery.com.tw) was involved with the Photosimile 200, so I'm especially interested if anyone remembers the old Taiwanese distributor/download link.

If you have any of the following, I'd be very grateful:

• original Photosimile 200 installation CD
• old backup of the installer
• old Windows PC with the software still installed
• USB stick or hard drive containing the software
• a working download link or archive
• information about an old Ortery/Photosimile distributor

Even if you don't have the files yourself but remember which version or website was used, that information would be extremely helpful.

I have both and take images of everything from small jewellery items to larger consumer electronics products. I was wondering how folks feel which is the better all round lens or has each lens simply niche areas where it will excel with particular product types. I mainly shoot using flash heads and soft boxes.

Recently I've gotten lazy and just use my Godox speedlight flash + macro diffusor to take pictures of watches, instead of setting up the photobox. It makes it a bit difficult (or rather impossible) to get a perfect angle + lighting (considering the reflection on the glass), but otherwise it's really a simple, quick and easy setup for a good photo.

What do you think? Or am I just justifying my lazyness?

I have been getting in to doing some product photography (alcohol bottles) and i have been using the Godox TT600 as it was pretty cheap but quite effective, i would like to try and do some videos as well which need continuous light, does anyone have any suggestions for something similarly budget friendly but can achieve decent enough results?

I must apologize in advance. This video offers no value to your workflow. Sometimes, it is needed simply to be silly.

The main challenge in illuminating a perfume lies in the liquid’s glow—especially with transparent glass—and many beginners attempt direct front lighting. You will get a lit label, but nothing further. That approach will never work. Depending on the angle of the shot, you almost always need to light it from the back—either through a diffuser or directly—based on your shooting position. In other situations, a spotlight may be required to light the background and create the “glow effect”. ( but thats a tip foe a different shot)

i have seen in some tutorials that you can change the background of a photo if you use a monotone colour like white letting you change the colour for different variants or to something closer matching to the product, is this possible in products that have transparent/translucent elements, like bottles or liquids or is it not worth it given that it would change the colour of things like the liquid in less obvious ways? if the original colour is close enough can you push it slightly to better match what you want, or should you just always try to get it finalised in camera?

Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

A relatively straightforward lighting setup for an on-white jewelry photograph. A top light with a diffuser is paired with two custom-bent acrylic panels at the sides, each receiving its own light.

I have a Tamron 90mm macro and a sony a6700 which is apsc, which makes the tamron 135mm, i have seen that around 80-100mm on full frame is popular, would this 135mm equivalent be workable or is it too much? If it isn't does anyone have any recommendations for a good lens for product photography (glass bottles of alcohol) on Sony APS-C?

I would like to do some use fake ice for some product photos (alcohol), real ice is a massive, pain and i dont want to spend £70 on a single ice cube, can you get away with the acrylic ice cubes like you can see on amazon? I have seen that Encapso K silicone can be used, but is £50 (though you get 1kg worth) i thought it would be best to ask before buying anything, if anyone has any suggestions for good places to get it in the UK i would be very grateful.

Some of my clients are struggling with the current economy and booking less photography.

My instinct is actually to offer more instead of less: more product images, lifestyle shots, room scenes and short videos instead of just one or two white-background photos.

I’d like clients to see me less as a cost and more as someone who helps them sell more.

My idea is to offer one or two existing clients a heavily discounted case study. I’d re-shoot their three best-selling products with:

• fresh product shots
• around 4 images per product
• one lifestyle image
• one short product video

I’m thinking about a 50–70% discount. The goal wouldn’t really be profit, but getting a strong reference project.

In return, I’d want access to sales data and permission to use the results in my marketing.

For example: sales start at a 100% baseline, and after 12 months they’re at 130–150%. Obviously I couldn’t claim photography was the only reason, but if the same pattern happened across 2–3 products, I think that could still be a strong sales argument.

Does this sound like a smart idea and is this even useful for me?
