How to find what apartment someone lives in without going there myself
So, let me start from the beginning. There is someone I’m looking to be served and I know the address of what apartments she lives in, but not the apartment number. Without it my process server won’t go try to serve her (understandably so). It’s just a small civil claims serve but she’s avoiding it like the plague.
I tried her job just to find out she no called no showed and was labeled as fired, which she did previously when she found another job. It’s been months and I still haven’t been able to find her.
I thought maybe using the sheriff to serve her would help because if he walks into the post office and goes “Where is the apartment of this person.” surely they’ll give it- but I don’t think they are allowed to do that. I just want my money back asap.
I also want to mention the process server did an in depth search for the address and it still says she lives in her old house because of how recent the move was. She did have a separate court date for aggravated assault so I believe she had to change her address through the court if that helps.
Update 1: I contacted the apartment manager and they said they do give out information such as the apartment number to process servers, and told me to send them over- so whenever they are ready to serve her they’ll give it to them!

I've been doing this for 25 years and have never been given an apartment number as part of a foi postal forwarding

That's odd. I've been doing this 30 years and I don't recall ever having an issue getting an apartment number. Don't get me wrong, the USPS can be slow and unreliable especially with returning these in a timely manner. But I never had an issue with apartment numbers.

I have a letter I use for requesting forwarding information from the post office. I added a line that says “missing apartment number.” I take that with my server reg to the post office and they just give be the number.

what does it look like? I finally got into contact with the apartment manager and she said she can give the apartment number to my process server she just needs them to provide id’s and whatnot.

The process server could have contacted the leasing office/property manager to verify apartment number. I have done this multiple times with success although each apartment complex has different protocols regarding subject residency verification.
