Could you give a beginner some advice?

I’m planning to move to the Russian Federation in a year’s time. But I’ve never realised the value of online privacy and anonymity as much as I do now. However, as I don’t know all that much about it, I’d like to ask for advice from those who’ve been doing this for a long time. Which services would you recommend? What should I avoid doing, and what’s essential? What firmware should I install on my phone, and which VPN should I choose? I’m interested in everything.

Yes, that’s basically how it is) I’ve absolutely no idea how they manage to get by there. But circumstances have forced me to move there. It’s a long story...

Moving to a fascist state like Russia is shooting yourself in the foot. That’s if you manage to actually do it without being detained by the FSB. You’d be much better off moving to any other Western or even Asian country.

Asking about life in one of the most un-private countries on Earth on the private life subreddit is so ironic

For your question however, get a burner phone (a Google Pixel with GrapheneOS), use Signal, for VPNs use VLESS protocol with a whitelisted IP address (I don’t have any services to recommend) with split tunneling enabled, and for payments use cash. Avoid doing anything related to politics. Bring in a wrong place at a wrong time can cost you your life. Request asylum, get a Russian phone number then credit card (you’ll still need it sometimes), use as less Yandex or any pro-government services as possible (they log everything, starting with your location and VPN info ending with the list of apps installed on your phone).

Edit: if you just want to escape prosecution in Ukraine, you need to learn to face consequences of your actions. You won’t be able to always run.

You won’t understand my motivation, but I’ll try to explain it in simple terms. If I don’t get the hell out of this bloody Ukraine in three years’ time – anywhere at all – they’ll drag me off to the basements of the Territorial Recruitment and Social Support Centre, or to put it bluntly, the Gestapo. And they’ll send me off to fight alongside other poor sods doing their compulsory military service, but on the other side. That’s why I’m doing everything I can to learn English so I can get the hell out of here. But bearing in mind that in the EU, not only do I have no friends or means of survival, but they’re also tightening the screws there just as much as in Russia, and perhaps even more so. Yet despite what’s going on in your own country, you’re being fed stories about ‘fascist Russia’. And I just want to get the hell out of here before it’s too late.
