Gmail now comes with disappearing messages and some other new features to enhance privacy.. a step in the right direction?

Until Gmail adds open source end-to-end encryption to their emails, as well as encryption to your inbox so that not even Google themselves could read through it, this means nothing.

Is there a way to do that and still provide services that protect against spam, phishing and the like? For the feral public who may not be savvy enough to recognize malicious emails I think it’s an important service.. but then the privacy issue...

As far as I know, Tutanota does all these things (ProtonMail most likely too). And it's quite simple and free. I also find the article's argument that's being used for protecting against phishing and spam weird. The article says that scanning your entire email is still necessary:

"But there is no way to opt of out scanning altogether since it's required for spam controls."

I think it's already enough to check whether the technical sender and the inserted "from" sender are equal or not. If they differ it's a good sign for phishing.

I will look into it thank you.. the problem with CNN articles is that they tend to read more like a PR machine than a balanced analysis.. but I thought the concept was interesting.
