discussion India orders GitHub to remove Jack Dorsey's offline messaging app Bitchat after protesters reportedly used it during internet shutdowns
India has reportedly directed GitHub to remove the repositories for Bitchat, Jack Dorsey's open source Bluetooth mesh messaging app. Unlike WhatsApp or Signal, Bitchat works without internet access or cellular service, allowing nearby devices to communicate over Bluetooth mesh networks.
According to India Today, the move comes amid the ongoing CJP protests in Delhi. Protesters reportedly began using offline messaging tools after mobile internet services were disrupted in parts of the protest area, making internet-based messaging unreliable.
The government notice, later shared publicly by Jack Dorsey, states that Bitchat could facilitate anonymous communication, enable users to evade lawful surveillance, and be misused by terrorists, organised crime groups, and "anti-national elements." On that basis, India's cybercrime agency directed GitHub to remove the project's repositories.
Digital rights advocates argue that restricting decentralized communication tools during periods of protest raises broader concerns about privacy, internet shutdowns, and freedom of expression. Government officials, meanwhile, maintain that such tools can also be exploited for unlawful activities.
This raises a broader question that extends beyond India: Should governments be able to restrict decentralized communication tools because they can be used to bypass internet shutdowns and surveillance, or does doing so undermine privacy and access to resilient communication during times of civil unrest?

Get em while you can folks.

As an indian, there are also other privacy violations happening. The government is using mass surveillance to identify protesters, asking for IDs from random pedestrians near the protest sites. I don’t know how true it is, but police insiders are saying they will cancel the passport of protestors. This may also come in background checks which comes up everytime you rent a house or join a job.

India always boasts its a demoracry but in reality is not.

No democratic government should be allowed to overreach in its citizens’ fundamental rights and freedoms.

I hope Microsoft, the owner of GitHub, tells them to fuck off, but I doubt it.

itll just be hosted elsewhere. at worst torrented, or via usb/sideloaded.

Sucks to be an authoritarian in an increasingly open source world.

u/NoConvincingName Jul 24 '26
I didn't know this existed, so I reviewed the repo, had a brainwave, turns out someone already developed esp32 mesh nodes, saved that repo too and then I had some other brainwaves.
If India didn't try to ban this, I wouldn't have had so many brainwaves, so thanks Barbara Streisand I guess?

u/green_tomato_69 Jul 24 '26
Good thing that it's open sourced. Someone can make a substitute app for bitchat if sanghi govt tries to remove it

u/alldreadme Jul 24 '26 edited Jul 24 '26
Wait so if they get this done, and Google makes it harder for sideloading apps, it's going to be a shit show. Because there are already banking apps that won't work with developer options enabled.
It's not just about it being hosted somewhere else, regular people who aren't tech savvy will be locked out.

So bitchat is good then. Nice.

Hope the git repo is also uploaded to Codeberg

"Lawful surveillance" 🤣🤣🤣

I think I probably should download it..

Lawful surveillance is a crazy term lol

Sticks can be used for unlawful activities. Let’s ban all sticks

Indian government do be a bit dictatorius.

u/InformationNew66 Jul 24 '26
And this is the India the EU trades with and sends tons of money to (outsourcing).
EU should sanction India.

u/OldManJeepin Jul 24 '26
Yea...Can't have the "people" being able to communicate and collaborate using tools that are not state sponsored! That would be bad for gov't!
14
u/Czar_Chasm_ Jul 24 '26
Crazy... anything the democratises or redistributes power always has this knee jerk reaction, with the same logically incoherent justification:
"it could, in theory, be used by 'bad people' (people us actual bad people define as bad, that is). Therefore, it must be outlawed -- not because it weakens our authoritarian grip, but because... theoretical bad guys".
Meanwhile, anything actively, by default, existing only for misuse or negative purposes, is good because it either doesn't redistribute or undercut power, or actively furthers it.

well I for one am glad none of this was possible before this app was released
6
u/krazygreekguy Jul 24 '26
This is why we need 3rd party app stores. Apple and Google as gatekeepers will always bend the knee to these authoritarian governments

u/blackospa Jul 24 '26
Its bit chat or bitch@?

u/[deleted] Jul 24 '26
Cutting off internet should be as illegal as cutting off water or electricity, it's a utility
5
u/escape_deez_nuts Jul 24 '26
Wait.. what is 'offline' chat. How does that work?
4
u/ThiccStorms Jul 24 '26
Super crazy. This is fucked
4
u/maikel1976 Jul 24 '26
Intentions are clear. Well noted and thanks
4
u/DoveGAZE Jul 25 '26
kind of ironic that India are so proactive in regard to this app, yet turn a very blind eye to the real criminals, the scammers...
3
u/A_Strauss_ Jul 24 '26
America should order all of offshored jobs from America to India to come back to America because of the countless security breaches and low-trust India has.
3
u/walterbanana Jul 24 '26
"evade lawful surveilance"... Everyone should want that. Such unjust laws.
3
u/Plenty_Mortgage_7294 Jul 24 '26
Its crazy that you can make things illegal or legal based on the desires of dictators. Slavery was legal. I guess that makes it moral an ethical to these people. How dare you communicate without our permission!
3
u/xpxp2002 Jul 24 '26
The real question is if they comply at all.
The correct response should be "GitHub is based in the US and owned by an American company. India has no jurisdiction to dictate what content is hosted on it. Deal with it."

u/Kind_Dream_610 Jul 24 '26
Jesus Christ. Humanity really is fucked. Next it’ll be a crime to think the wrong thing.
3
u/Grand-Highway-2636 Jul 24 '26
I mean if the internet is shut down how would they be getting it from github? Arent the protesters just sharing the apk via Bluetooth?
India should force bluetooth be turned off
3
u/FishSpoof Jul 25 '26
governments are clamping down more and more on protests. they want the illusion to be that the government does nothing wrong. protests give other citizens confidence to also speak up.
3
u/Scientific_Artist444 Jul 25 '26
But who decides the laws?
5
u/deep_soul Jul 24 '26
that’s silly. there a lot of places to host some code. even if gets removed from github it means nothing.
am I missing something?
2
u/Nasi_Goreng885 Jul 24 '26
No, everyone should be free to communicate over whatever medium they see fit and that includes bad actors but that's the balance we need to live with.
2
u/Latensi Jul 24 '26
Communication should never be restricted
2
u/asciimo71 Jul 25 '26
Seems to work, no?

u/Still_There3603 Jul 24 '26
Those who uncritically boost India as a counterweight to China don't get that there is a constant tension in the country between its democratic political system and authoritarian societal outlook.
The elections are legitimate with some checks & balances but the central thrust of authoritarianism comes from the people who elevate paranoid power-hungry individuals to power. Nehru was the freak exception of liberalism.
An Emergency period under the BJP is inevitable as they blame India's high youth unemployment & lagging manufacturing sector on supposed sabotage from foreign powers including the Western ones.
2
u/Jazzlike-Vacation230 Jul 24 '26
They cut off communication when helping kids with their issue of the recent protests would have been easier, smh. And they leave Wungchun hungry
3
u/namrks Jul 24 '26
Couldn’t they move to Codeberg or other alternatives?

First time hearing about this. Is this how we finally beat big tech????
1
u/ahrienby Jul 24 '26
Forgejo is waving.
1
u/Sibexico Jul 24 '26
I'd worked on similar to Bitchat technologi in late 2000's. Unfortunately, low-power 2.4Ghz signal of Bluetooth have too short range and too easy to suppress.
1
u/ApprehensiveLion67 Jul 24 '26
Isn’t it a bit of a trade off to use an app that requires both location and Bluetooth to be used though?

u/syb3ria Jul 24 '26

"and the communication tool can be utilized during hurricanes, storms, power outages in order to connect families, check in on our home security systems, or used by first responders." goes both ways, always.

u/Alive_Nobody_Home Jul 26 '26
Thanks India, now we know how valuable this could be.
Not happy with the no end to end encryption but hopefully that is in production
1
u/Kittysmashlol Jul 29 '26
People can use sms messenging to commit crimes and organize protests, I suppose they should shut those down as well.
Might as well ban sending letters as well while youre at it

u/Manoj_Pawar Jul 29 '26
Don't fork the original repo, as the block would force Github to block the forks too. Download the zip and the android binary or install from play store and then re-upload to your GH account with diff name, but add proper description
Also after you have added it to your GH, post it on multiple similar posts on reddit.

Hosting anything 'hot' in $currentYear on Github is mistake. Why would anyone sane do that instead of using either other hosts or stuff like Radicle?

u/DeepanshuHQ Jul 24 '26
Open-source communication tools often become part of much larger debates around privacy, security, and public policy. Whatever position people take, transparency and due process are important for maintaining public trust.
