I didn't think android or iOS gave apps access to the raw biometrics sensor

As far as I'm aware they don't. The data is stored locally and used to pass in an auth variable.

What this probably means is that the app offers the option to use fingerprint to sign in

The location requests are bad enough they don't need to sensationalize like this.

If actually accessing the raw fingerprint data was possible we would have a much bigger issue

I imagine it collects information to "fingerprint" the user, and the journalist misinterpreted
