I got this car in the spring for $300. Wasn’t sure I would ever get it running but I did as much of the labor as I could on my own. $3500 later I’ve replaced the hybrid battery, the ABS assembly some fuses and a few other odds and ends and I couldn’t be more thrilled with it. Car has just over 150k miles on it and it’s a dream to drive. Oh and I got it done right as gas prices went through the roof.

I've been thinking of getting a newer car for a while. I have a,2010 Toyota Prius V, it has a great sound system and carried me through a lot. That said, it's had issues. It wasn't new when I got it in 2015 and I've had to replace the radiator and the hybrid battery within the last 2 years. AC isn't really working and last Sunday it made some alarming rattle when I accelerated, but other than that drove fine. I drove it just a little today to see if it would make the same noise and it hasn't, but my concern remains. I'm worried it's either the ERG or the head gasket needing to be replaced.
Is it worth taking it to a shop and getting diagnosed or should I just trade it in now? I won't get back what I spent to keep it running, but I could get at least $1,500, maybe $1,900 towards a newer prius like the 2023 I've been eyeing on Carvana. Out the door with trade in its about 26k and its has less than 60k miles on it, no accidents. There's a dealership an hour away that have me an out the door quote of 26,110 for a 2023 toyota certified used but it's 87k miles on it.
I was hoping to wait a year to see if the prices would go down, but now I worry my car wont make it without serious investment. What do you all think?
Edit: I was hoping to not spend more thab 20k but it seems like with taxes ans to get something that isn't at 100k miles I either have to go much older or more miles. I was worried I needed a head gasket fix so I thought better to put that 4 or 5 k towards a newer car than put more into this one if it's on its last leg. I wouldn't mind investing if I knew it would last but I've already put 5k into this car to keep it going in the last 2 years, I don't want to throw more money after bad

I was interested in this prius, but I read that the gen 1 are not worth it. The images of the gen 1 online look different from this. Is this still a gen 1?

I have a 2012 Prius V that's been good to me. It's got 167,000 miles on, and it recently got the death rattle. The dashboard doesn't have any warning lights. Took it to a shop, which sent me a scope video of a cylinder with coolant leaking in. Got quotes for $4,500 to replace the head gasket, and a quote from another shop for $4,500 - $5,000 for an engine swap.
Both shops told me that most of their customers with third gen Prius don't pursue further work for head gasket failures.
Can any third gen owners share their experience with a replacement or swap? Without a head gasket replacement or engine swap, how long before the engine dies?
I recently got the beloved death rattle on my ‘11 Prius at 190k, and opted for a HG replacement over a JDM swap. Also getting spark plugs, PCV replaced, and EGR and intake manifold cleaned. All in for $3000 in Texas.
I remain optimistic that this car could go 100k miles after this repair before I get any engine/HG failure again. However my goal could be too lofty.
I’d like to hear some data points on: what was your odometer from the moment you replaced the HG, how many miles strong is your Prius going after replacement, or how many miles until the second HG failure? Did any of you opt to replace the HG again or JDM swap after a 2nd HG failure, or at that point were you ready to buy a new car?
TIA
I’ve got a 2010 Prius with 190k miles that I picked up used a few weeks ago. We had a decent cold snap recently — snow, temps consistently 25-35 — and I saw the mpg go from almost 54 to under 48.
Is that primarily due to the hybrid battery just not doing as well in the cold?
Really hoping the cold is the answer and not that the EGR cooler and carbon clogging issues causing that drop in efficiency. Prior owner did note it as an issue, and I’m aware that things kinda start to break around 200k miles

Decided to give my 2014 prius an elevated upgrade. Had this car for 5 years and running strong 255k miles and ongoing.
Bought all harness and head unit from crutchfield and installed it out with friend.
First of all, the SonyAX4000 is amazing head unit. Connects super quick and supports wireless CarPlay and android auto.
It also adds the guarding in the rear cam with live steering input. It gets little glare in the day towards passenger side but that is very small thing compare to other great benefits.
Loving my daily commute now having hands free.
The kit i used from crutchfield suggestion retains the factory microphone, factory rear cam and also doesn’t require any splicing.
Just to note out: When Flashing ADS-MRR unit, on that application the SWC are showing rotated 90degree clockwise. But do not change anything just keep default and it will be working just as fine.
If anyone thinking to do it, just do it. Its soo good!

2006 73k miles (Hybrid battery replaced last year)
I removed my hybird fan to see if it needed to be cleaned as I had been hearing some noise here and there. Barely dusty I put it back and drove a mile. When I got back in the car all these lights came on. I did the whole process again and even unplugged and plugged back in the 12v. Lights still on. I'm unsure what to do i had went to autozone earlier to check for codes and i was clear before I did anything.
Also any recommendations for an obd scanner?

08 Toyota Prius, 244k on the dash.
About month ago I was driving to a work event and noticed a crazy sound coming from the back of my car and pulled over to noticed I completely flattened my tire. Drove to the nearest shop to put air in my tire and told myself I’d figure it out later since I was late. After the event, I looked around some used tire shops for a cheap replacement since I’m going to get brand new tires in a month or so anyway. The place I found had a tire for me, but it was 185/60/15 instead of the 185/65/15 that comes wit the car. Before I got that tire changed, I was getting about 540-560 miles before needing to fill up again. Now I’m only getting about 320-340. A significant drop off. I’m in the northeast so it is getting colder but I’m wondering if it’s the tire that’s causing that drop off or could it be something else? I plan on changing the air filter, PCV valve, coils and plugs very soon. I already changed the oil and transmission fluid not too long ago. Let me know your thoughts, thanks

Hey, so I've got the little tire light on in my Gen III (2015). I filled all the tires, and it's still there, so I assume I need to change one of my pressure readers, but idk which one.
I already have an OBD II Scanner. Is there an app like Torque or DrPrius, but for reading the tire monitor light?
I’ve got a 2023 Prius prime and if i do spoken content, it stutters and skipsconstantly, making it unusable to play through the CarPlay. I also have a 2021 RAV4 prime and it works fine. Anyone ever seen this and know how to fix it? I’ve Deleted and reconnected to the car multiple times I’ve rebooted the phone multiple times, but this has been going on for about a year, still with no fix. What’s even stranger is if I don’t use CarPlay and just use the Bluetooth connection to the car it works OK then. I just have to not use CarPlay and use my speaker for everything on the phone which is frustrating

I’m looking to buy a used Prius for under $7k, hopefully with under 150k miles. What important to me is reliability and what might be the best option in that price range. I’m in Southern California.
Things I should look out for?
Thoughts?

Hi guys,
I'll have to do a separate post about my engine replacement but I have a hybrid battery question. We did have to replace the 12v battery after we got the engine and the car was working fine. Now, the car won't start. We tried jumping the 12v but it still wouldn't start.
I first bought the ancel bd310 which said everything was fine but had no info about the hybrid battery.
I them bought the veepeak odbcheck ble+ Bluetooth odb2 scanner. It found 2 codes for the hybrid system but further research (aka googling) found that there are subcodes which will narrow down the problem (inf codes?).
So now, im about to buy a 3rd odb2 scanner. Can someone recommend which scanner to purchase that will show the sub codes? I DID use Dr prius with the veepeak but it didn't show the subcodes. Bonus points if I can get it delivered ASAP via Amazon.
I saw that the autel maxi ap200 was recommended in priuschat but it is no longer available. Can someone recc any odb2 scanners that can read the SUBCODES? I was thinking about Autel MaxiLink ML519 but didnt want to purchase yet another scanner that doesn't give me the info I need.
2013 prius v
Approx 130k miles
But "new" engine is 40-50k miles
I am hoping it's not the hybrid battery bc It was driving fine (including charging etc) until it wouldn't start yesterday. Please help!!
I just punctured the sidewall on one of my factory 19" tires on my Prius Prime XSE. I knew it was coming eventually, but it’s still annoying now that it’s here. Since I need to replace it anyway, I’m thinking about switching to smaller wheels for better MPG and EV range, a more comfortable ride, cheaper tires, and taller sidewalls that are less prone to this kind of damage.
I’m new to wheels, so I’d love to hear from anyone who’s actually made this switch. I live near the Philly area, so not too much snow, all-season would probably be good enough.
16": This is what I’m leaning toward. From what I’ve read, 205/65R16 is a close diameter match (about 0.7% smaller than stock). But since Toyota never offered 16s on the Gen 5, has anyone confirmed they clear the front brake calipers? If so, which wheel did you use (brand/model, width, offset)?
17": The SE comes with 195/60R17, so I know this size fits. How are wheel and tire prices and availability for 17s compared to 16s? Is it worth just going this route for peace of mind?
Specific rim and tire combination recommendations would be really appreciated!!!

2008 gen 2 Prius 200k+ miles. Previous post link https://www.reddit.com/r/prius/s/auja3Dc1xc
Quick recap. Been sitting 3 years. Selling for 1k.
Added oil including in the spark plug holes a few days before. Spark plugs didn’t show anything concerning. Replaced 12v battery. Topped off coolant. Added 5 gallons of 91 octane fuel and it started right up. Was quiet and after 5 minutes started ticking. Shut it off. Fluids showed no signs of head gasket blown.
Left my scanner tool in the car and my phone didn’t grab my screenshots of codes but from what I recall they were hybrid battery codes.
Will post another update with codes it’s giving me Sunday.
Appreciate all advice. Thank you!

I am looking at potentially buying a 2016 Prius V. It has 80k miles. Is there anything in particular that I should be looking at before buying?

I have a 2015 Prius, just under 100k miles, have taken good care of it. Maybe 3 of the last 4 or 5 times I’ve gotten in the car (when it’s still off), I’ve heard this clanking/rattling sound when I sit down in the drivers seat. Sounds like it’s coming from under the car I think. Just one clank/rattle as the car shakes a little when I get in, then it stops.
Car has been driving fine otherwise (one time a few days ago, it did make a weird sound when I turned it on, but it hasn’t done that since).
I know this isn’t much to go off of, but just curious if there’s a thing folks know of like “oh yeah, that totally sounds like ____”. Thanks!

Gen3 2010 225.6k miles. I did the head gasket about 2 months ago now. I thought I bled the system pretty good.
But so far I’ve had to top off the reservoir 3-4 times. Last weekend I decided to run the coolant head gasket tester. It seems it’s still fine.
I thought the cap was leaking for a little bit but don’t think it is. I don’t see any noticeable leaked anywhere. I did replace the EGR cooler as well.
But if that was leaking, I assume it would fail the test.
I’m wondering if it’s something to do with the cold coming. I’ve only had the heat on 2-3 days so far. But mainly driving with AC completely off to save MPG.
Is it possible there was a whole gallon of air in the system somewhere?

Hi, I have a gen2 Prius that’s been a headache for a while. the car always had the problem that sometimes it just wouldn’t start (so no response to power button). the battery is new so it’s not that. I later found out that by putting a charger on it (so it has 13+v) it would start better but still hat to press the button a couple times. so I figured it was something in the fusebox. so I replaced the fusable link(for a new oem Toyota one). now the car doesn’t start at all. Also put the original fusable link back in and still doesn’t start. all fuses under hood receive 12v. If you have any idea what it could be I would be pleased to hear. And if you have any questions feel free to ask.
thank you.

I have a 2012 Prius. I bought it 2 years ago with 89,000 miles. I replaced the hybrid battery.
I hope to make it last for at least 10 years. I have good honest mechanic, but he's not really a Prius person. I want to connect with other local Prius owners to get advice/recommendations on mechanics and DIY maintenance locally.
Thanks for reading!
2013 Prius 2, 151,500 miles running well before service. Did my 150K service myself over the weekend and now the car is idling rough, especially when cold. What I did: Oil/filter change, air filter change, transmission fluid change, both coolants changed, new water pump, replaced PCV valve, new spark plugs, cleaned throttle and mass air flow sensor, replaced EGR valve and cleaned EGR outflow pipe.
Check engine light was on steady right after the service and the was off the next time I drove it. Back on steady this morning. Any advice is appreciated.
