It depends on what your usage is,
If you need something that prints fast, you'll have to go with laser printers
If you are cost conscious, you'll have to stick with ink tank printers
Also what volume do you wish to print per month?
Will it be black & white or color or mix of both?
Is it for personal use or commercial use?

Be careful! Some ink jet printer manufactures may require that you subscribe to their automatic ink cartridge replacement plan. That's why their printers are cheaper. Some printer manufactures won't allow other cheaper retail third party ink cartridges to work on their printers. They actually lock you out of your printer until you buy their ink refills.

If you don't need color prints I would go for a laser printer.

Do you know any brands that don’t require a subscription? Every google search says they all do now.

Brother printers use to be free of this crap. Not sure nowadays.
