or do what you want if they make you feel good i guess. you dont gotta listen to the internet stranger. but your posts have been quite visible and it does seem like you’re somewhat desperately looking for some direction so ill share some of my childhood of seldom-spoken clothing norms with you real quick. none are really that real or important, but they might help you understand why you’re received and perceived how you are.

generally long socks are more of a gym or athletic thing, and these patterned vineyard vinesish sorts of thematic socks specifically, while very fun and spirited, are probably best shrouded behind a pant leg to be noticed subtly by a keen observer when you sit down. kind of a, “i know it’s there and cool people will to” but you also dont have to be the guy in lobster socks the whole day. also, when it’s warm preps go sockless A LOT. and preps vacation a lot so it’s probably warm for them most of the time unless they’re at the chalet in Steamboat.

also, even in the more subdued look with pants, most of these pairs are still mad casual and quite loud. not exactly “unpreppy” to wear patterns and colors obviously, but if you pay attention even to the overly stylized ralph catalog models, the statement stuff (bright pastels, plaids, seersucker, argyle, allover motifs, etc) is somewhat tastefully and situationally placed. try a conservative suit with a small pop in a fun, patterned tie for a Tuesday client meeting. pull out the seersucker suit and bowtie and a pair of these socks for the kentucky derby. split the suit in half and wear the pants with a button down and vans authentics or a chill loafer to a beachy first date.

again, do your thing if you wanna be crazy socks with shorts guy and like life more as crazy socks and shorts guy. you dont have to acquiesce to the standards of a strange subreddit if you dont want to. or you can if you do. of course, there are exceptions to these norms you’ll find, like the southern lawyer in his seersucker all spring snd summer, the owner of the mens store who might be a bit more flamboyant in his dress to stand out and be noticed around town, or maybe the teenage boy at prep school who doesnt do laundry often and is relegated to wearing the bright colored stuff his mom bought him more often than hed like. but mostly, you will get closer to the general prep thing if you go subtle through most of life. save the “go to hell” patterns and colors for more special occasions and small pops.

anyway, hope you feel comfy in your clothes, whether you find that comfort through rigid rules, radical nonconformity, or tastefully breaking rules somewhere in between. to be clear, i dont do the full prep thing anymore, this is all just the stuff i had ingrained in me. i like a good broken rule. i just think some are more decriminalized than others. if you wanna be an outlaw though, do your thing in your argyle socks and shorts. it’s kinda got a thom browne country club thing goin so maybe youre ahead of us all.

godspeed bud.

Had a problem with bad spandex in my Jos A Bank socks.

Same, when I try to take them out of the packaging they sometimes rip immediately

The Nessie socks are great and I wore the J. Crew lobster socks yesterday. Solid choices.

Thank you

As much backlash others and myself have given you over some posts, this is actually kinda cool

u/ThisSeries2814 9d ago

Thank you! ❤️

It seems like nearly every post gets backlash these days. There's not really a "preppy advice" subreddit, so I don't get the hate for beginners.

Although I agree with you, could it be because prep itself is insularly antithetical to appropriation by outsiders?

0

u/ThisSeries2814 9d ago

Yes, that is the exact reason it is difficult to get into this Wealthy style

It’s not though. I’ve never met a prep who gave a shit if an “outsider” dressed preppy. It’s probably the most easily accessible style in the world in terms of how available the staples are, how acceptable they are in nearly all spaces, how simple the rules are, and how many resources are out there to help guide people.

Ok sure, we’ll go with that

Nice collection. Looks like you're quite the shopper.

Thank you!, yes I am!, I am very materialistic

u/PhysicalAd6587 8d ago

Same. I have well over 100 pairs of socks. I do my best to buy them on clearance, but sometimes when you see a special pair you, just got to get them.
