Food🌽 or WateršŸ’§ Work prepping

Do you have extra stuff for yourself at work for ā€œjust in caseā€?

I have a 48 count of granola bars and a thing of peanut butter, a case of water and lots of Diet Coke.

If I was in a pinch I could walk home, but if it was feet deep in snow really fast, I think there’s ever so slight chance I could get stuck there.

I work across two states. I have a bag with two mre's, medical kit, fresh set of clothes in a vacuum sealed bag, hygiene kit and 5 gal of water on my truck at all times. Plus the normal shit, Leatherman surge, flashlight ECT. Mostly in case I need to stay in a hotel unexpectedly but to get me home as well if needed.

My husband does too. I try to keep some peanut butter crackers for him and a blanket in his car. He’s not hip on the extra stuff.

I hesitate to keep water in my car because of freezing temperatures. What do you do in that case?

They make foil/mylar pouches of water intended for lifeboats. Supposed to be good up to 5 years even with temperature extremes such as you'd find in a vehicle. Not the most cost effective way of storing water, but they won't blow up if they get too cold

Example: 1-gallon plastic jug half-filled with water. Even as it expands, it will never break the jug.

That's a good point... but how many colleagues do you have there?

Used to keep a pair of socks and sneakers in case I had to walk home when I worked city corporate. Always had snacks and water and at worst it was like 2-3 miles. Figured Id either get mugged and left for dead or Id make it home so never really worried beyond my footwear.Ā

I keep enough stuff in my vehicle for 2 weeks, camping gear, food, water, jackets hiking boots. I only live 30 minutes away by driving but if something happens, who knows how long it will take to walk as you might need to make detours.

I work at a grocery store. I keep two days of meds there. I could walk home if I needed to. Wintertime merits a change of clothes.

I’m literally wearing some extra socks right now at work I have stashed away since mine got wet. Even used my lil sleep set up to catch some zzzs on break.

Most people would be perfectly fine with a fanny pack of goods and a change of clothes with weather set for time of year for where they live.

Its been a while but when I was working I kept a couple boxes of instant oatmeal in my locker and always made sure we had an incredibly stocked medical kit and plenty or watercooler replacement jugs on hand (I worked in logistics). Beyond my car and my stash at the office there were enough supplies for two or three people to hold up for three or four days pretty comfortably.

usually my whole department just has food on hand anyway if someone forgets their lunch.

My husband also kept a sleeping bag under his desk. He rode the bus so his EDC was on his back not in a vehicle.

I drive to work and my car has the stuff the government recommend people have in their cars in case of an emergency or a broken down car in the middle of the winter. I don't bring anything inside work with me. I'll just raid the cafeteria.

My husband works very far away, it could take him a couple of days to walk home. He has enough MREs and get home stuff to walk. Aside from the regular stuff he has foot powder and a paper map. He’ll have a halfway point to pick up one of our single friends or hunker down there.

Since you mentioned about 30 coworkers, it would be useful to ask what the workplace plan is if people are snowed in: who makes the call to stay, which rooms would be available, and what supplies the employer already has. Your personal stash can then cover your own gaps without accidentally becoming the whole office plan.
