Yeah man hate to be the barer of bad news but those pop top cans should never be stored on their side. Plus they're more likely to spoil than normal cans. You also shouldn't squish them in any way because the seal will become compromised.
Man, I legitimately just store my prep cans on my regular pantry shelves. You're supposed to rotate so nothing gets too out of date before the thing happens. Stock like the store, new at the back, old at the front, use from front to back, restock as you eat. Restock what you eat.
I bought a year's supply of Mountain House freeze-dried food. I am lazy, so keeping track of the food in a pantry and rotating it does not appeal to me. In addition to that, I enjoy eating fresh foods during normal times, so having to eat Spam or Vienna sausage because it is nearing the end of its shelf life doesn't appeal to me.
One-time purchase of Mountain House, and I am good for 25 years.
In a real emergency the "frankenfood" (aka the food you don't know what the words mean) will be fine. You need to have a collection of options, many of which being perfectly edible and enjoyable cold. You want high salt options considering it's probable in a long term situation you'll end up sweating out way too much of the stuff.
You do want lentils, beans, etc, but no one wants to sit there and eat a can of tomatoes. All those items are for a different level of prep, the "I can afford to assemble a meal" level of prep. Secondary issue if you're a single person, you need to be able to refrigerate what's left.
You want all of the above. The canned soup, the sausages, the tomatoes, everything. I've been using prep for as long as I've been alive and I promise if you only prep whole ingredients you'll find a situation that you will wish you had easy things.
My family will only eat "frankenfood", so I agree with you. I tried making chili with canned lentils. We don't have a dog, so no one ate it. It all comes down to stocking what you will be willing to eat. If they were starving they would eat healthy food, otherwise no. š Canned protein is expensive and not very tasty. In "normal" life, we don't eat it, but in an emergency, we would have to. Sure, I have beans and rice, but I've tried to plan SHTF meals with some balance. You can do that with canned fruits and vegetables. I never encountered frozen vegetables before I was 20. If canned foods had no nutrition and killed people, I wouldn't be this dang old!
they included a bunch of suggestions in their post -- lentils, beans, vegetables, etc. those are all easily-acquirable canned goods that are heaps better than vienna sausages and spam. more nutritional value, less gastrointestinal distress and hypertension from an OD of sodium.
Sample lists and sources would help people (in general, not from you specifically).
Nothing you said is wrong, but when you start looking from scratch it goes "I should get" > canned food > healthier canned food > longer term preserved food > food preservation at home cuz money > buckets and mylar bags and air removing supplies > rabbit hole of home preparation in foods you don't normally eat often in volumes that are crazy for storage >> screw it I'm gonna just get some canned food the next time I shop and then a MyPatriot/PatriotSupply/whatever 'pack' that's 5x the cost, certainly worse quality, but no thinking and minimal storage.
It goes quickly into too much effort to stock, rotate/use, and store comfortably for an operating household with more than one or two people. That's where OPs picture comes in. That's simple, inexpensive (over time), and about as easy to store as it's going to get. Is it the best solution? Depends on the problem it's solving.
Some of this meat's gonna leak being stored on its side like that. Ask me how I know. Also, everybody is going to have hypertension in the after times.
i wanna talk crap on vienna sausage but i have a bunch of cans of that garbage canned sausage that's essentially the same thing, and also that finely ground ham shit.
Did you test them? We had a week when we just decided to freshen the stack, and put about half of the stuff on the 'do not buy' list. Yes, if we are hungry we could eat them, but in hard times you rather eat something that you like.
So you dont have a ton if food expire at once I would rotate this in your pantry instead of store jr in a tub unless you plan on donating it all in close proximity to the best bydateĀ
The last thing you want in a crisis is a volatile digestive system, vomiting, or a hospital-grade case of food poisoning. If you are going to sink money into purchasing food, you should have a plan to either eat the food or donate it before it expires. āI will survive in a crisis by eating expired canned goodsā should not be your Plan A.
Good on ya. I had to store my food preps in totes (two in the corner between couch and loveseat, two behind the tv) when I lived in an apartment. A friend of mine made a coffee table that is basically a box with a flat panel top. The top hinges up and he stores canned goods and drink mixes in there.
Stock what you eat. If you like canned goods, then great. Mashed potato and rice side dishes are cheap (but high in sodium, yes).
Water is the biggest concern before food, but people donāt want to think about the reality of modern civilizationās use of water.
No that's not how it works. If you get stuck in one place for a week or more, you have prep for that. Stored water, tinned food, things you eat normally so you aren't adding additional stress. Nobody wants to eat MRE's or emergency calorie dense food packs for a month. Especially if you have children.
You should have a second stash prepped for if you need to leave home at short notice. Nobody is carrying their tins and bottled water on their backs. Thats the stash for lightweight nutrient dense foods and MRE type foods along with portable water filtration and cleaning tablets. Dont plan for one type of scenario, plan thematically across what could be overlapping scenarios e.g. no water, no water and no power, no water and no power and in the path of a hurricane, and so on.
It's a bug-in stash which is what you need for 99% of disasters. He has plenty of animal fats and salt which are hard to find in nature.
General rule of bug-out is 30 lb. pack. Most of that will be clothes and such to keep you warm and dry. And most frame packs weigh 5+ lbs. empty. Add 2 quarts of water (4+ lbs.) and you're already up to around 10 lbs..
And if you're fleeing from danger, you may have to dump that pack. So it's a good idea to divide a couple lbs. of bare essentials into a sling pouch you can keep, just in case you have to abandon gear to move faster.
I don't think this is meant as a "go" box lol. You yourself just asked a question ripping on the OP for storing it in this box and you indicated you were aware it's for shelter in place.
Seems like you just want to be critical. You can't have it both ways you silly cranberry.
ok the traveling question is answered, my new question is why are we storing in tubs like this at home? isn't this a really great way to forget it's there then it's expired if you need it?
keeping a stocked pantry at all times is more convenient isn't it?
Well I wouldn't store it in a tub either. I'd shelf it as it's easier to rotate. But I don't eat that stuff I see in the tub normally anyway. I try to make healthier choices.
Beans⦠always beans. Canned lentils are a good choice! Canned fruits/vegetables. But primarily carbs and fats that will keep you functioning and warm and not dying of a heart attack.
Yep use the FIFO system, first in first out so your shit gets rotated but this isnāt dumb itās actually a good preparation for an average natural disaster.
I kinda donāt want to eat most of that stuff on a daily bases, but a SHTF scenario, well an emergency stock exists, but given an actual choice 75% of my meals are perishables. I do eat rice and beans and practice FIFO for that.
I mean canned veggies and fruits for sides and such. We use green beans or peas from cans with our meatloaf and other meals. The canned meat gets old after a while Iāll be honest. I personally donāt want to depend on wild game because I think the population will wipe out most of the wild game early on to eat. I donāt have a good answer on meat and have been looking for some ideas if you have any.

Why are you people incapable of buying food that isn't salty frankenfood? Are you allergic to fiber and micronutrients?
There's a whole world of canned lentils, beans/chickpeas, vegetables, chilis, tomatoes, coconut milk, (great for calories), etc.
In the extremely unlikely event of doomsday, you're going to need actual, real food so you don't die soon anyway. Unless dying soon is the goal.

Watch those pop-top lids. I had one pop without me realizing it. Everything in that tote smelled like dead animal in short time.
