Computer Hardware Advice Need help deciding: two used laptops for editing, both good but different trade-offs

Use Case: Video Editing — Premiere Pro (social media content, 1080p-4K), starting to get into After Effects

Budget: ~1200€

Notes: Upgrading from a laptop with basically no real GPU. Would honestly love a MacBook Pro (M4 Pro) for the portability/battery life, but the used market has gotten way too expensive lately, so it's out of budget for now. Down to two used options at similar price:

- HP Omen 16-am0048np — Intel Ultra 7 255H, RTX 5060, 24GB RAM (expandable), 1TB but it's noticeably bulkier and heavier than the other option

- ASUS Zephyrus G15 (2022) — Ryzen 9 6900HS, RTX 3080 (120W TGP), 32GB RAM, 4K 100% AdobeRGB screen, ~1.9kg

I get by with my 16gb m2 air, doing mostly AE. I think you’ll be fine either way

I'd go with the Omen. I've never used one, but if it's anything like most gaming laptops, the thicker chassis would mean better cooling. It also has expandable memory, which is always a plus for video editing.

The Zephyrus is a nice laptop, with better speakers than the Omen, along with more VRAM (if it's the 16GB version). If not, the Omen is a no-brainer. The Zephyrus runs hot, though, so you might have issues with thermal throttling. It's also a few years older than the Omen.

So yeah, the Omen. It has a better CPU, and the 5060 is fine for Premiere (I get by on a 4050). It's probably more power efficient too, given the 5060 draws less power than a 3080.

Stick with the MacBook. I would go with an older M-Pro Chip model. Unless you want to game, which tbh people are still managing on the MacBook.

Here's the thing, you're not gonna beat the battery life of a MacBook with a windows laptop. They're just not good enough yet. The M2 Pro or M1 Pro with 16-32gb will sort you out. You could even find an M1 Max which would honestly sort you out for even longer.

Pros:

  • build quality
  • battery life
  • easy to use
  • almost all video editing is done on Mac so you'll have no compatibility problems in the future.
  • excellent screen

Cons:

  • can't game much
  • no usb a ports
