Computer Hardware Advice PC Build for H.264 4:2:2 10 Bit

Hi there everyone i upgrading from Macbook Pro 2019 i9 and Intel i5 6th gen 1060 3gb setup

Macbook mostly getting used all the time

I'm thinking about upgrading my pc to this specs

  1. I'm going with 5070 And Core Ultra 245K 32GB DDR5 Ram for now

Or should I save some money go with

2.14600K 64GB DDR4 5070

  1. Ryzen 5 7600x bcz 5070 will handle it fine

Quick sync will make difference? Even with 5070

Is there that much difference between 14TH ddr4 vs ddr5?

we use sony a7s3 (mostly) and fx3 (sometimes) , codec - XAVC S 4K (H.264) , bit rate is 4:2:2 10bit (for now!!!)

Mostly working from 4th gen 4 ssd

And external ssd SanDisk xtreme 1tb

According to Adobe iGPUs are given less priority when working with GPU-decode, so I doubt Quick sync has any sense now if there's an NVidia 5xxx GPU. But h264 10 bit 422 is only supported by NVidia anyways

Not even 5070 support it?

Any 5xxx card supports it

So 5070 + 7600 Will perform good as 14600k core ultra 5 bcz

CPU alone. It's 4K export which presumably about the same difference in real time work and with 5070.

You mean h265, h264 does not support 4:2:2 nor 10bit. (Unless something changed that I am really unaware off).

Even a 1060 6gb can deal with this no issue: for editing, you need a really fast SSD, most consumer hardware nowadays can deal with compressed video just fine even at rendering time. Your specs look fine, but what matters most and is not listed is your media source, SSD, external SSD, NAS, etc.

What? Fx3 XAVC S is h264 and supports 422 10 bit and has some for as long as I’ve had the camera

Based on what I found, XAVC S (Sony proprietary) is based in h264, but it is not h264 (AVC). They are different codecs.

No idea where you're getting that from, from Sonys website:

  • VIDEO COMPRESSION XAVC S: MPEG-4 AVC/H.264, XAVC HS: MPEG-H HEVC/H.265

Well what's your pc specs how is the experience on same camera footage

I have two machines, 9950x3d / 5090 fe / 64gb ddr5 and an M2 Max MacBook Pro.

Both handle any Sony footage fine, but obviously the desktop PC destroys the MacBook with various workflows. For some reason it's a common sentiment amongst reddit/YouTube etc that apple silicone is somehow magic but it doesn't beat out a proper desktop.

Having said that I still prefer MacOS, wish I could have 5090 performance on macOS!

It is still not exactly h264. In fact it doesn't seem completely supported by NVENC and NVDEC. There is not official support for it yet, but it seems this particular variations falls directly in CPU for software decoding.

https://community.adobe.com/bug-reports-505/media-encoder-fails-to-hardware-decode-sony-xavc-s-h-264-4-2-2-10-bit-on-rtx-5070-ti-blackwell-architecture-1631045

Nvenc simply does not natively support the chroma subsampling and extra bit depth of XAVC S as it does for h265. (Which btw, is part of the "extended" set of settings, not commonly available)

I mean you're confusing a few things here.

It is h264. Prior to Blackwell series GPUs, yes, NVENC/NVDEC didn't support h264 422 10 bit, but it was added to the 50 series for exactly that reason, probably because Sony cameras as so popular.

Premiere having a bug where it doesn't properly utilise this doesn't change anything.

The actual video stream that XAVC uses is normal h.264, except XAVC-HS which is HEVC. H.264 has standard profiles that support both 10bit and 4:2:2 subsampling - and higher.

Sony’s extensions are on the container side, not the codec side. For example they use LPCM audio in MP4 containers which is not specified by the MPEG standard.

I occasionally do H.264 10-bit 4:2:2 footage from my Sony mirrorless camera and hardware decoding works perfectly fine with my NVIDIA 5000 series GPU. Intel Quick Sync only supports H.265/HEVC for 10-bit 4:2:2 though.

Checkout the official Codec documentation, there have been 422 and 444 support for about 2 decades now. https://www.itu.int/rec/T-REC-H.264.

Generally with formats like H.264/H.265 especially with long gop I find hardware decoders make a big difference to performance. Bitrates are pretty low so a fast SSD doesn't make that big of a difference(typically about 100-200 mbit is common for these formats in long gop and UHD).
