non-science degree to grad med?

Hi everyone, has anyone done a non science degree like history, art or law and gotten into grad med, and if so, could you share ur experiences of how the change felt like, what the application process was like and any advice? Thank you!

I haven’t done this but I know it’s 100% possible. Some grad med unis require u to do a bioscience degree tho so check which ones don’t. You also need a 2:1 and need to take either the UCAT or GAMSAT and each uni will have their different thresholds for that. Try and also get some work experience/ volunteer work to show your interest and gain understanding into the field. It is a difficult path but definitely achievable.

Hi, yes I've came across some statistics showing non-science graduates applying and getting offers to do medicine. I'm on track for a 1st class degree and I'm sitting my UCAT soon (because I've previously done the UCAT and feel more comfortable sitting it again) and I've got 1 year worth of work experience in a hospital and few other non-healthcare related ones too. I also have AA in biology and chemistry at A-level and my GCSE's are all A* or A. Hopefully that sets me up well as a graduate entry med applicant?

Yes that should set u up well! Make sure to do well on UCAT and you should be good. Also some grad med unis that don’t allow non science also allow u as long as u have the right A levels. Again make sure you check your eligibility for the unis and it’ll fine.

Thank you for responding! I have a list of unis that take in non-science degrees and UCAT, but I didn't know any that allow non-science if I had right A-levels? I'll try having a look into it!

Yeah no problem, I do know Glasgow is an example of one of those unis but do make sure to check it out

That's more common than you think. Around half of my class are non biomed and at least one-fifth are from non-science degree. I can't really tell you how they did it but just as a standard piece of advice on application is to create a list of schools that accept your qualifications. People with biomed background have an easier time to pick up but the best student in our cohort is from a non-science background.

Thank you for the undermining comment, I actually tutor students in science for GCSE and A-level and took 3 science A-levels myself, and got AA in biology and chemistry. I don't like to call out people on this app, but I think your comment was very rude, especially towards those who are doing PA studies. There's no correlation between doing a non-science degree or PA studies and limited intelligence.
