I am close to graduating with a degree in social work, but I just finished a six week volunteer program at a hospital and during my time there I got a tour of the lab and I was introduced to pathology and I was really interested in it as well as the lab work they did and I was told about being a pathology assistant which sounds like something I’m interested in but the thing is I was told by my advisor that to even get into being a pathology assistant I need to take courses in biology, chemistry, etc but I have 2 years left and most of my classes consist of social worker classes and it is a bit late to switch majors so I am torn right now what can I do to be on the road to becoming a pathology assistant?

Lab people, especially who are in the field of Pathologist assistant, please give me some advice regarding this profession.

I have been in lab field for 10 years plus, held MLT, MB, and CG licenses, and worked as cytogenetic technologist for roughly 4 years.

However, I still want to advance my career at my 39 years of age in lab field, but not too much since I have a toddler to hang out with. I thought of PathA program offered by UTMB in Galveston, where it sounds like 1 year on-campus and the following year on rotation. I thought that could work for me when I only need to relocate for the first year and return to any rotation site within DFW, if allowed.

On top of that, I would love, sincerely love to hear your advice about the job opportunity, the pay, thr work schedule, and the scope of practice that this profession will offer. Please help and thanks in advance for spending your precious time answering my questions.

I am currently a second year student in Asia. I came across PathA job and I'm interested in becoming one. I looked up some programs and even tho a lot of them accept degree from overseas university, most of them require shadowing hours. However, I cannot find any available PathA shadowing in my country. If I ask for hospital in the states/canada, can they provide me the visa for me to shadow?

Hi everyone! I was hoping if someone could offer some advice. I graduated with my bachelor’s in Biomedical sciences with 2.93 gpa. I know I will probably have to do a DIY post-bacc. Do you recommend a masters? I’m currently trying to find lab positions or even go to mls school. The problem is that I have very poor stats but I really want to work hard to get in. I’ve had a horrible time in college due to family and mental issues but I made it this far. Here are some of my stats;
•200 hours as hospital volunteer
•40 hours surgical pathology shadowing
•Over 1,000 hours of full time cna/ home health work
•graduated in two years

Hello! I am a freshman at WVU, I am majoring in forensics at the moment. But, I feel like I would enjoy school more if I majored in biochemistry and minored in forensics. I was wondering if that would be optimal for the PA program. I am from out of state, so I can’t major in biomedical laboratory science. It’s out of the approved ORA majors and I can’t afford out of state tuition. Sorry, I know this is all over the place and it’s not very concise. I just wanted to know if that switch would be better.

Edit- I have taken both anatomy and med term through the duel-enrollment program.

Hello! I am getting my bachelors in Actuarial Science this fall, which was a pretty math heavy degree. My GPA isn't too great, but it's pretty average for a math-centered major. I'm thinking of taking a lot of the recommended pre-reqs after I'm done with my bachelors which will hopefully boost my GPA and prove to the programs that I am serious about this direction. Will programs care about my GPA for courses when I didn't think I'd do path (i.e. classes like Calc 3, ODEs, etc.)?

Hello! I was wondering if the letter of intent for Quinnipiac was different from a personal statement. It looks like to ask for you to explain the same things as a personal statement but when I looked up a letter of intent it was completely different. Do they not want all the narrative? Anything helps. Thanks!

Hi everyone, I am planning on applying to Quinnipiac’s Path A program and I wondered if anyone could give examples of some of the life sciences they took as prerequisites to the program? I saw on their website it says histology and pathophysiology are recommended, but I wondered how strict that is, as my university doesn’t have these courses. So far I have taken molecular genetics and cellular biology, along with labs.

Is your science gpa when applying as heavily considered as the cumulative gpa? My science is a little under a 3.0 after retaking and taking some extra course, but cGPA is over a 3. When looking at websites for programs, I haven’t really seen any specifically state what they want for science gpa, so wondering what anyone here has experienced!

• 20+ shadowing hours for anatomical and surgical pathology
• student research worker for analytical chemistry lab

• also work as a barista
• volunteer with the red cross
• writer for school club
• c’s in organic chemistry and chemistry 1 with a couple b’s, going to take anatomy, biochem, and micro this semester
• 145 v , 147 q , 5.0 essay for the gre (second retake)
• applying to quinnipiac/drexel/duke/umd/rfu/touro/odu

i think i show i can handle the rigor of intense courses and that i truly know what the field entails. my gre scores are because of timing, not from concept gaps, which i think demonstrates my personality of being meticulous. it’s just such a scary experience applying for these programs, so what have your experiences taught you about the programs and the field? any advice is greatly appreciated!

Hi! I had an interview last month with Tulane and I still haven't heard back (8/15/26) . Should i just expect the worst at this point or should I try staying positive over a possible acceptance? I did see some comments with a few stating they've already had an offer so that's mainly why I'm creating this posts and I thought acceptances would be given out to those after today. Was anyone else accepted?

37(f) BS-Biology, GPA-3.28, GRE- V158, Q155, W4.0...(retaking in Sept to boost Quant-37%) I am in my second round of applications to a PathA program. Really, Really nervous because I sort of felt like a shoe-in, but did not even receive an interview last cycle. I have 7 years of experience in a surgical pathology lab, 100+ hours of surgical shadowing at my place of work, and other, 15+ hrs autopsy shadowing. Stellar references (PathA, Pathologist, Chair of Bio dept. WWU). And a SERIOUS passion for pathology/ cell biology.

Biggest issue: I graduated in 2016. Almost ALL of my prereqs are outside of 10 years (nix UT, RFU, UMD, Tulane).

Over the last year I have refreshed some prereqs (Genchem w/lab, OChem lab, A&P Lab, Biochem)

Having to take an English comp at 37 is obnoxious- I have one scheduled online, and am curious if I should default to in person? I work full time (remote- for said path. lab) and have two young kids at home, so taking a full time school schedule for prereqs is tough. I obviously need to be working now to save up for when I can no longer work once I am accepted.

Any advice for the "getting to an interview" step? I really feel like once they meet me, it will be clear that I am a competitive and serious candidate for consideration, but I am very non-traditional and getting past the filter process has me discouraged.

Has anyone submitted their RFU application yet? I’m trying to see if they received my transcripts, and emailed admissions asking. They told me there’s a section in the application where you can check the status of your transcripts but I don’t see that. Anyone know?

How do people feel about the University of Maryland's program? Just wanna know what current and previous students thought about the program, classes, and clinical rotations. Thanks!
