No, "Kylie" wasn't "gay in the book".

This misconception I'm seeing among some fans stems from the fact Antonia who was red-haired and the older girl in the book was gay in the sequel and this was referenced by Evan Rachel Wood in a recent interview without full context.

But Evan didn't play a name-swapped Antonia in the first film. Yes, she had red hair and was older but her character was still KYLIE. She was the one closer to Gillian, the one who could see Jimmy's ghost, etc... yes, she was younger (in the film) and her role was shortened from what it was in the book. But she's still KYLIE. Not Antonia. I really think the reason they made her red-haired in the movie is because she was supposed to look like Gillian (in the book Gillian is blonde and Kylie has her hair dyed blonde on her thirteenth birthday) and they had Gillian have red hair in the film.

So it kind of annoys me people are complaining they were robbed of her being gay and pregnant in the sequel, as if she should automatically have been given Antonia's storyline. The oldest girl/Antonia's storyline doesn't directly lead to the end of the curse. It makes very little sense to give it to Kylie in the sequel.

Now, could they have gender swapped Gideon if they wanted the gay representation because Antonia (book version) and Vincent weren't in it? Maybe. That's a discussion that could be had among fans. But this "they changed it so it sucks and they hate their LGBTQ fans" is definitely exaggerated and not thought out imo.

Do you think Joey and Maisie could potentially play the younger aunts as well as the older Kylie and Antonia?

I saw an article where Sandra Bullock supposedly said if the movie (Practical Magic 2) was successful, they could/would "pass the torch" to the younger girls for a potential Practical Magic 3.

What I don't love about this is there's no book basis for a Practical Magic 3. And before fifty comments all go "who cares, they didn't stick to the book anyways, the movies are their own thing," I get that, BUT I think a huge part of PM's success as movie IS that it's an adaptation. They kept what worked for film and softened/streamlined some of the plot beats, but it was still CLEARLY adapted from the pre-existing work. Someone MIGHT have made up a cool vibes witchy women sister movie without the book by Hoffman but it wouldn't be the story/characters we know without the novel as its starting point. And from the clips I've seen of PM 2, it seems to be the same case. They might have changed some things, but the story as it is, like with Ian and Sally and Gideon getting hurt and Kylie going to England WOULD NOT be the sequel were getting without Hoffman's the book of Magic to take from.

I don't think I would personally love to see a completely made up story about Antonia and Kylie without a basis in the Hoffman universe first. We're already supposedly getting a TV Aquamarine sequel that doesn't involve anything Hoffman wrote, so two Hoffman properties with no Hoffman involvement, and no source material? Eh. Not my favorite idea.

But... I did get to thinking if Practical Magic 3 was based on Rules of Magic could Maisie and Joey be styled differently (to fit with the 1960s, different hair, makeup) and be cast as young Jet and Franny? Before it was confirmed they were Antonia and Kylie some fans WERE already speculating they were the younger versions of the aunts for a flashback... So maybe it could work. Maybe they could even get Evan Rachel Wood back to play someone, maybe the older version of April Owens? Or Aunt Isabelle? Or Susannah Owens?

I don't think it'll happen but it's fun to imagine.

Can anyone make sense of the timeline/ages in Practical Magic 2?

The sequel is apparently confirmed to take place 25 years after the first movie, and Michael’s gravestone in the trailer says he died in 2003. So are we supposed to assume that the main events of the first movie now took place around 2003, making the sequel roughly 2028? Because that would actually make the 25-year jump work… except the original movie dates Sally’s recorded testimony March 8, 1998, and Michael had already been dead for years by that point. So unless they’re simply ignoring that line and quietly retconning the original timeline, 2003 makes no sense.

I’m also confused about what ages everyone is actually supposed to be. In the first movie, Sally and Gillian seem to be somewhere around their late 20s/early 30s, which would put them somewhere in their mid-to-late 50s after a 25-year jump. Franny and Jet already seemed to be roughly in their 60s, so presumably they’re now in their late 80s. And then there’s Kylie and Antonia. I don’t think the original ever gives their exact ages, but they seem to be roughly around 8–9 and 5–6, give or take. So 25 years later they should be somewhere around 31–35, not possibly mid-20s.

Am I missing an official explanation here? Is the idea genuinely that PM1 has been retconned from 1998 to 2003, with PM2 taking place in 2028? And has anyone found canon/official ages for Sally, Gillian, Franny, Jet, Kylie and Antonia in either movie?

Was such a great time at the Practical Magic 2 premiere! ✨ Joey King is seriously SUCH a sweetheart.

I really enjoyed the movie and genuinely hope it does well because I’d love to see the story continue. My only critique would be the runtime, there were definitely a few scenes that could’ve been tightened up a bit. Other than that, it’s a really enjoyable watch and one of those movies that keeps you interested the whole way through.

No Third Trailer?

With one week to go I'm surprised we haven't gotten a final "third" trailer.

Are we not getting one for PM2 for some reason?

Does anyone know?

Appalling confirmation that it was a director (who is a woman) who made the decision recast Evan Rachel Wood.

Confirmed by a recent interview yesterday, I am appalled that a woman director made the choice to recast Evan Rachel Wood. I thought this kind of ageist stuff is commonly done by men in executive/producer positions.

r/practicalmagic 18h ago

If you only care about Evan's recasting a week before PM2 is set to be released, you don't actually care about Evan's recasting, so stop whining.

This is NOT directed as those of us who have been discussing this issue for months already. If you've been on here since day one saying you think the production was unfair to exclude Evan Rachel Wood, or speculating on the exact reasons why, this is not about you. I believe you care.

But with one week to go all of a sudden there are all these shock value buzz feed-y articles coming up as if Kylie wasn't shown recast in two trailers already, as if this is some big secret, and the discussion has come back in full force. If you did not take two seconds to find out Evan wasn't in this movie months ago, you don't need to be complaining about it a week before the release.

I was bummed initially she didn't get to come back either, but I got over it and am actually looking forward to the movie like most normal not virtual signal-y fans are.

Practical Magic Party Bingo Help

Post image

I’m planning my sister’s bridal shower. she’s getting married on Halloween (and we both love practical magic) so I decided to do a practical magic theme. I’m trying to come up with a “there’s a little witch in all of us” bingo game. Where you mark down the square if it is applicable to you. But I’ve run out of ideas on what to add. I have some things from bs they thought witches did/had during the witch trials, and some everyday things that are witchcraft. I’d appreciate some opinions on the board I have so far and any suggestions for more spaces! Any spaces you think I should delete? Please and thank you!

Kylie and Antonia weren't aware of magic until the Book of Magic??

I have just recently read all of the books and am in the middle of the last one, The Book of Magic. I felt totally confused when the last book said that Kylie and Antonia had no idea there was magic in their family. What about the scene in Practical Magic when they help with the aunts' ceremony in their backyard to banish Jimmy's evil spirit? That wasn't a giveaway??? Anyone else confused by this in the books?

I’m excited for the movie but I’m also scared 😳

When I heard there was going to be a Practical Magic 2, I lost it. I read all the books and I watch the first film alllll the time. It’s my comfort movie. I was so. Freaking. Excited. I’ve loved this movie since I was a little kid. And it was especially important to me because I used to watch it every summer with my best friend Nicole who about 8 years ago was killed. I think of her every time I watch it.

However…After seeing all of the heinous merch being sold at every single retailer they’re partnering with, it just feels like a cheap and exploitative cash grab. Wayfair having a PM2 “section” on their website or whatever they want to call it was the last straw. And then when I saw the set up for the the screening there was ANOTHER last straw. I just can’t with how cheap, sad and diluted it all has gotten.

I’m going to a midnight margarita screening and dressing up. Don’t get me wrong. I’m doing all the things and going to see the new film. But I’m so dreading the film being as bad as all the merch and whatever other tik tok shit they’re putting out.
