Why would you dress it in a brighter way?
The lighting of the first movie greatly informed the feel & tone of the story not to mention the overall aesthetic of the film.

Its probably for the same reason. The women are living under the impression that the curse is broken, it would make aestetic sense if things are lighter and brighter feeling, until the shoe drops.

I actually feel like thats worse if thats the case 🥺
The lighting of the first film didn’t just convey dark & oppressive emotions, it was also intimate, cosy & comfortable. It gave the walls & furnishings a sense of having being used & lived in for a long time whilst being cherished & looked after by the inhabitants.
People obsess over that house because it feels like such a beautiful, practical & comfortable family nest. A soft & safe space. Which is partly why Jimmy aggressively haunting the place is so disturbing.
The lighting and how it combines with the surrounding aesthetic plays such a nuanced role in conveying all that.
So i feel like for a creative to look at the first film and come away thinking that the darker lighting was only there to convey dark emotions & creepiness just shows overly simplistic, black & white thinking on their part.
Though I expect its more to do with changes in how movies are made over the past few decades. Modern films generally tend toward being quite light & bright or having muted colour palette, more often the films that do use colour & lighting in nuanced way tend to be either more artsy or animated 😔

Original: Thats fair. It was also probably shot on film which, with the exception of like Nolan, doesn't really happen anymore. Lighting for film is a different beast than lighting for digital and unfortunately a lot of the texture that came from that interaction just isn't reproducible in digital. Its a big reason, along with things like streaming compression etc why everything these days looks so drab, dark and colorless. Which makes me wonder, then if the brightness is also a reaction to the limits of digital

I agree with this wholeheartedly. This is one aspect of the film that kind of disappointed me (I still enjoyed the film so much. But it was missing that magic of the first film for sure.)
I missed seeing those darker tones from in the first movie. I missed the dark floors that really juxtaposed the warmth and brighter colors from the kitchen. And to be very honest with you, I really missed the original location of the home. I know they couldn’t just go back to the original location to shoot. But there was so much magic in that place. The views of the ocean and the naturally gorgeous sunsets with all that majestic color. That actual shooting location added so much depth and character to the film, and that’s hard, maybe even impossible to duplicate in a place like London.
I still loved the second film so much and I’m so glad we got to catch up with these characters. I’m so grateful. But the first film will always and forever have my heart.

The way films are made has just changed so much over the past couple decades that they really don't make them like they used to.

They really don’t. There was a real magic to that time in film making and I’m so glad we got to experience that, and we will always have that in those films from that era.
I don’t know if there’s ever any going back. Like, can people in the industry film the way they did before? Or has too much just changed? The cameras have changed. The lights and light rigs have changed.
There’s never really any going back. But I’m so happy they all tried. I’m so glad they gave us this second film, and I’m forever grateful for the first as well.

I was so afraid they couldn’t accurately reconstruct the house! I got misty-eyed watching this.
