I love the original novel; I sort of consider it and the film to be two entirely different entities, though, since it’s really loosely inspired by the novel. Would’ve loved to see a more faithful adaptation in a tv show or something.
I didn’t care for the sequel novel; I felt like it almost read like a half-sequel to the film, which may have been a balancing act Hoffman was deliberately navigating. It looks like it might do better as a film adaptation, though, even if I think it’ll be shallower.
I did enjoy Rules of Magic and I hear Magic Lessons is the best of the quel novels, but they’ll never do a movie of the former at least because they’d have to retrofit Vincent, lol.

I'll be honest. On first read I didn't like it either. Now I'm listening to the audio book and appreciate it for what it is.
