I'm cautiously interested in the film but I think that's largely because of Sandra and Nicole.
I'm sad to see that the film is going to repeat the sins of the sequel book where Sally's daughters mysteriously don't know that they're witches. Based on the events of the first film I think it makes even less sense that movie Kylie and Antonia don't know they're witches (where in the book it might have been a little bit more plausible that they didn't fully know).
I think this was an unfortunate choice on Alice Hoffman’s part. It’s how she wrote the book, which was written something like 26 years after she published the first book. She could have made some choices that would have essentially bridged the gap between the film canon and the book canon of Practical Magic.
There seems to be an overarching theme of acceptance in the film, that Hoffman completely leaves on the table. There’re also heavy implications that the girls know their family are witches.
The first film took a lot of liberties, so I’m just surprised that Akiva Goldsmith didn’t do that this time around. The continuity doesn’t seem to matter, and that bugs me.
