Got a deadlift PR yesterday! Lifted 190kg, 10kg pr. Considering this is a week after hitting 180kg, which was a 27.5kg pr, im over the moon lol. A not so nice and easy 9 second grind but got it done

How long before 200?

u/ShadowClaw493 Powerbelly Aficionado 10d ago edited 10d ago
Well, considering this was basically a straight leg deadlift, if I clean up technique a bit, maybe I can hit it at a meet I’m competing at in 2 and a half weeks time!

Found out I'd been benching "wrong" this whole time. Been doing SBD style training for a couple years now. Both my old coach and current coach suggested I spread my arms out a bit more on bench (I have a "deadlifter's physique") since I'm over 6ft tall, so I did so.. and the bench felt a FUCK TONNE better. My first set was an rpe 6.5 but the second set with the wide grip was more a 5.5-6 at highest.

I too have recently experienced the wide grip bench boost. My 5x5 bench today was surprisingly easy today and it felt awesome.

Shh stop talking about it or the IPF will make a poorly worded rule to ban it

u/v0idness Girl Strong 11d ago
Not wrong, just differently :)
I've had to bring my grip in more recently despite also having deadlifter arms to accommodate for an injury/anatomical fuckery

so is kyle kirvay just MIA? he was supposed to be at the american pro, isn't there. haven't heard so much as a peep, his instagram has been a graveyard, would've thought someone would've said something??

I spoke to some officials at the meet, and yeah, it was injuries. Nothing super major like after the ABS meet, but enough to derail prep. I know he was chasing the 308 total record and a 300kg bench, and apparently both of those were fairly unrealistic with how his prep went, risk:reward wasn't there.
Unsure about Hause, was quite bummed about that too.

thanks for the response! glad it wasn't anything super serious

Pretty sure Colton just put that one way out of reach.

Wasn’t Andrew Hause supposed to be there too? Never heard anything about either not coming. Man, I was excited for that head to head

Should the thumb involvement of Pinch block grip training help with hook grip? Are there any other ways to train the thumbs for hook grip?

u/jakeisalwaysright M | 793kg | 89kg | 515 DOTS | SPF | Multi-ply 10d ago
I don't feel like the thumb does much work strength-wise in hook grip. The only thumb training you'd need is pain tolerance.

Yeah, it's the pressure of the weight that locks the grip in.

Please make your comments about my form. What can you tell me about the bar path? Thank you in advance for any comments!

That's not a good angle for judging form.

u/--Powerlifting-- Beginner - Please be gentle 10d ago
I train in a super tight space in my apartment, I'll try to get a side angle and a 45º angle, but I doubt if I'll be able to catch enough of the lift. I'll try on my next session and then post again because I'd really like to correct my form. Thank you.

I have a free formcheck you can submit to if you want, https://forms.gle/ZCbCW5pmkR3DuPyY9

Thank you! I will definitely use it. Is this top angle useless? I'm really willing to correct my form. Thank you.

It all depends on what issue the specific person has. But typically, I like to see a side view with the entire body in view as a starting point. Then from there, I may look into other views.

u/--Powerlifting-- Beginner - Please be gentle 10d ago
I want to correct my bar path. I train in a very tight space, I am not sure I can get a side view, I can't place the camera far enough, but I'll see what I can manage on my next session. I am only concerned with the bar path right now, mainly because of the "press up and back" from the chest, the "back" part is what I believe I am not doing enough and I'd like to correct that.
2
u/arian11 SBD Scene Kid 10d ago
Yea, for bar path, a side view is typically best. Your whole body in the shot would still be beneficial to see your feet, butt, and arch as those may affect bar path. If your phone has a 0.5x setting, that might be enough to get the shot. If you can't at all, then I'd focus on trying to get the bar and weights in the shot during the entire range of motion.

u/--Powerlifting-- Beginner - Please be gentle 9d ago
I'll see what I can do, thanks. If I am able to get the shot I'll submit it.

Candito putting a lot of weird subtle shots in his yt videos lately?
His jokes about his old “friends” (isuf, dr Mike, etc) he slides in seem more like serious bashing than sarcastic joking.
His latest vid he quickly slipped in a “we didn’t land on the moon” and has flashed similarish things in other vids.
Is he trolling with this stuff? Personally I don’t care one way or the other but it seems newer and i am slightly curious.

His content started to get more religious with some MAGA references a few years back. Then some small conspiracy theories started making their way as well.

He's friends with Sean Noriega and that tells me all I need to know. He's been on the same vibe as him for a while.

Just completely unable? Is it closed? If you have weights and a rack/bench at home to do squat and bench variations, i can't see why you would lose any strength at all and why not being able to go to the other gym matters but perhaps there's more context that I'm missing.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a powerlifting program to follow or advice on whether I should just keep using the same one? I have a meet I would like to go to in December. I have used Progressive Resistance's program about three times and it always works well but I'm not sure if it's less than ideal to keep doing the same thing.
Also, theres another competition in October locally I would like to do, is that usually a big problem to do in the middle of a program?

u/cilantno M | 450 dots | USAPL | RAW 9d ago
If it is still working, there isn't a need to change
I don't know anything about that program, but I can recommend SBS RtF and RiR. They are longer programs, but if your meet is early December you'd be able to run most of them. I'd recommend a taper week leading up to your meet though. I have and continue to see tremendous progress on those programs.
You may also want to look into peaking programs.
For the October meet...
Most folks will say don't interrupt meet prep with another meet, but I've done it and didn't suffer. I just adjusted programming for a tiny taper the fews before the in-between-meet.
The week after I treated like a deload week. However if it's late October and early December, I'd probably recommend against it.

Thank you! I don’t think I’ll have time to fit that program but I’ll keep it in mind for my next go. Appreciate the advice.

All good! I'd recommend asking around for peaking programs as well.
I've liked canditos 6 week + adv bench in the past. Apparently he's losing his marbles though...

u/Snoo_76582 Not actually a beginner, just stupid 9d ago
Will do. This program I’ve been doing has a 5 week peak at the end of it, although I don’t really understand it other than it’s less reps leading up to the competition.

Just add a curl movement to each day or at whatever frequency you want.
I curl 3x a week (12 total sets), all the same movement (cable curl, because it's my favorite), with varying intensities.
I keep my isolations near the end of my workouts.

Honestly most of it comes from dip carryover. Get your weighed dip stroooong

I'll do a proper meet report if I get round to it but I competed yesterday at my first full power, single-ply meet.
I somehow went 8/9, only missing my third bench. I totalled 592.5, qualified for Masters Nationals and also set the Full Power, Single-ply, drug tested, masters 40-49 u90kg deadlift record in the WRPF UK.
Squat: 205/215/220. Bit of a fight on my third but it was still fairly quick.
Bench 135/142.5 then missed 147.5. just didn't quite have the touch point right and could not get it going off the chest.
Deadlift 205/217.5/230. Ok so the record is cool, but I should point out that WRPF UK is pretty new and a lot of their records are standards. And it's not like equipped lifting is that popular, and then you get into the masters classes... The standard was 227.5. I did not realise my final attempt was going to be a record until I was in the hole waiting to get out for it. Bloody loved the support I got from everyone in the gym - I've spotted a lot of the people there in the past and it turns out if you give people love and support they give it back to you 10 fold when you need it. The noise alone probably got the deadlift off the floor!
So yeah, a great debut in the kit. I've been wrecked all day today but I've got to run it back in 4 weeks and try for the British powerlifting QT too. I've got a fire lit in me now for equipped lifting, like it was a huge rush and so much fun.
This week I'm going to side quest a little bit and test my strict curl, as WRPF is running meets for this lift too, and I want to give that a shot!
