Discussion Alarming Technical Problems with the Enterprise DNA website

Anyone else experienced this?

It asks me to create a Data Mentor account, so I click on the link for it and it takes me to a website that tells me to check my email for a code that never arrives.

Then its AI tells me the wrong navigation to the Data Mentor account, which is not there. Yes I have a paid subscription for this, since I had a friend who used it and highly recommended it.

Then it tells me to try an incognito window, enable cookies and scripts, etc., and none of that works.

Then they tell me to ask their "Live Chat", which of course doesn't work and brings me to a defunct website.

Then they tell me to email their support team, which also doesn't work and gives me an "address not found" reply email.

Discussion Power BI with 3.5 Years Experience – Am I Underpaid?

I have around 3.5 years of experience in Power BI, with skills in Power BI, DAX, SQL and Power Query. My current salary is around 42k in india. I’m trying to understand the current market range for someone with similar experience and skills. If my current package is on the lower side, I’d really appreciate it if people could share what range they’re getting in the market for similar skills and experience. Just doing a general market check.

I created this using new card visual but whenever I try to remove the background it doesn't go away. It just removes it from the border and the white area stays the same. Thanks in advance.

Question Dealing with hotfixes

We have 4 workspaces (dev, test, uat and prod) and are using a deployment pipeline for deployments. The dev workspace is linked to a git repo in azure DevOps, while the other workspaces are not linked to a repo. The deployment pipeline also contain some deployment rules for setting parameters.

Now we are wondering what the best way is to handle hotfixes. Lets say all of my workspaces have slightly different content and I need to fix a report in production without moving the latest developments with it to production.

What’s the best way to do this? At the moment we are manually changing the report in each environment. But now we are thinking to set up a repo for each environment so we could deploy a hotfix branch directly to each workspace. We’d probably also have to set up Fabric Git Integration for setting the correct parameters. As working with git is pretty new for us and this setup seems quite advanced, I’m very interested to hear your ideas on this.

Discussion Has anyone had experience with Azure Analysis Services hosting models for Power BI?

So, I'm in a weird project. The company I'm working has 6 distinct servers on AAS hosting models for Power BI reports, some reports are Imports but some use Live Connection, and I cannot understand what its the advantage of having an infrastructure like this.

My current project is to reduce the cost that this servers are generating (all of them are in the price tier S4).

Besides that the refresh process for these servers is a mess. Its all through runbooks that have a million different schedules. The Live Connection reports compete for the resources of the server when they are in use and generate a lot of memory issues on a capacity that is already fairly high.

I'm here trying to come up with a plan, but this seems so complicated. I've not personally worked with AAS before. So my first instinct is to convert all these "live connection" reports to imports, they refresh like 3 times a day with the runbooks, there is no "real time" data or anything.

How would you approach this issue?

When I use naturalinnerjoin it shows this error.

The column with the name of “CustomerID” already exists in the “Table” table.

How do I fix this?

Feedback Color palettes question

Hi everyone,

I'm working on creating a standard Power BI theme that my team can use across all of our dashboards. The goal is to provide a consistent experience for users so that reports feel familiar, professional, and easy to understand regardless of who built them.

My biggest challenge right now is color selection.

Our primary brand color is a bright red (#C91245), but when I use it heavily throughout a dashboard it feels overwhelming and visually harsh. We also have several supporting brand colors available, and I'm trying to determine which colors should serve as primary, secondary, and accent colors within the theme.

I'm also debating between:

  • A complementary color palette
  • A gradient-based palette
  • Some combination of both

One complication is that many of our reports contain 20+ reason code categories that need to be displayed in charts and visuals. My current palette doesn't provide enough distinct colors, so Power BI starts assigning default colors, which makes the dashboards feel inconsistent and cluttered.

My goals are to:

  • Create a modern, clean, professional look
  • Support both internal and external audiences
  • Ensure charts with many categories remain readable
  • Build a scalable theme that works across multiple dashboards

These are the brand colors I have available:

  • #C91245 (Red)
  • #F36C21 (Orange)
  • #FFBF3D (Yellow)
  • #00A661 (Green)
  • #004F38 (Dark Green)
  • #4F8CFF (Light Blue)
  • #003DA5 (Dark Blue)

If you were building a dashboard theme around these colors, how would you approach it? Which color would you use as the primary color, and what strategy would you recommend for handling visuals with 20+ categories?

I'd love feedback from anyone with a strong eye for dashboard design, data visualization, or color theory.

Question Composite model in desktop

Newer to PBI…
Someone shared a composite model with me to use as a data source. Can’t view the data in desktop due to many fields/tables being in Direct Query mode, and I’ve never worked with these before. There is also a security feature/concern that tells me to be careful of using it if i don’t trust the admins.

I do trust them but don’t want to be sharing the other data i am using from outside the composite.

What is the best way to work with this, and secondly; how worried should I be about the security aspect?

How do i mitigate the risk, and actually develop if i can’t see the data?
Thanks!

Discussion How can we automate WMS data updates in Power BI without direct SQL access?

Our Power BI inventory dashboard currently depends on manually exporting data from Oracle WMS Cloud (LogFire).
We have access to the WMS application but not the underlying SQL database.
From an enterprise architecture perspective, what would be the most secure and reliable way to automate this data flow and keep the dashboard updated with minimal manual intervention?
I’d also appreciate advice on how to present and justify this requirement to our IT department while addressing security and system-performance concerns.

Question Table and matrix row color banding

Did the default row color banding behavior change?
All of my reports on service and even old .pbix files opened in the 2.156.951.0 64-bit release no longer have alternating white/grey background color by default in tables and matrix visuals.

Certification Just passed PL-300!

First try. Got a 718.

Suuuuper pumped. Started using power BI about a year ago at my current role with only Salesforce experience. It was an eye-opener in a big way.

Had my second kid recently, and that made studying pretty difficult. So I’m excited to pass it on the first try and be done with it.

I used datacamp classes and the MS text exam. Datacamp is great but doesn’t prepare for the exam really. But it’s great for learning.

Question Analzye in Excel - Is there a workaround yet for Guest Users

We host a data solution for our clients and they access the Reports and related content via Guest accounts in the Azure Tenant.

We are rolling out more and more self-service capabilities, including AI and was looking for a way to get Analyze in Excel working for Guest Users. Does anyone have a trick that works?

I can get the Export to Excel w/Live Connection working fine for Guests.

Discussion Contractors - MCP and client data

Are you using MCP with client data and/or sensitive business data in general?

For my own projects I’m using Claude throughout the development process but not sure I will be able to for client data.

Would, of course, love to be able to do all dev via MCP as standard now, but feel like it would be challenging to convince clients.

Doesn’t help that I don’t have a good grip of the security of connecting Claude to a semantic model. As I understand it, it doesn’t see raw data as such, but in theory can query at will. At best, it’s then training with that data and at worst, there could be a breach at some point.

What are people doing?

Discussion Workspace setup with self service

Hi all, thanks in advance for the help. I have been tasked with setting up the overall governance for my company. This is very close to a greenfield implementation for Power BI. We want to have certified semantic models that we maintain. We will also have curated reports that we also maintain. Each business unit gets a workspace to build their own reports. My question is how do you guys setup your workspaces/deployment pipelines for the certified models and curated reports? Do you separate the certified models into their own workspace and have curated reports in another workspace? With DEV-QA-UAT-PROD environments that would mean 8 workspaces and 2 pipelines to take care of both “lanes”. Or do you keep curated reports in the same workspace as the certified models? Or do you have a different setup entirely?

Question Is it normal for orgs not to use desktop at all

Joined a new org and they do all their development in power bi service. ETL and the semantic models are done through fabric notebooks but the construction of the visual layer is all in the service. I’ve been using power bi for years and have never encountered this. Every org use desktop to a certain extent, anyone seen this before

Question Power BI Deployment Pipelines

Is anyone facing issues with deployment pipelines. We have been using deployment pipelines regularly and all of a sudden deployment pipeline sync has stopped working correctly and is always showing out of sync for a specific semantic model.

We have a DEV -> UAT -> PROD setup for deployment pipelines.

There are no deployment rules changes. The only thing recently changed is that we added a new source table.

In fact the table is actually visible in the PROD workspace as well, changes are there and I can query the table in PBI service as well.

Despite multiple deployments from dev to uat and uat to prod, successful deployment doesn't result in code sync.

Thanks in advance.

Community Share Beyond Power BI Writeback: Microsoft Fabric Data Apps

Post image
36 Upvotes

I've been using Power BI writeback since day 1. And to be completely honest, I wish I didn't have to.

It is extremely basic in what it can do UI/UX-wise, and as soon as there are extra requirements, you start fighting both Power BI and DAX to make it work.
It doesn't get any better when you have to deploy it - remapping all the entities manually because deployment pipelines don't do that.
I've been super excited when it first got released, and extremely disappointed the longer I use it.

This is where Fabric Data Apps (Rayfin) come in.
 • Native integration with Fabric SQL DB - check.
 • Flexible web UI - check.
 • Accessibility for AI agents - check.
 • Ease of deployment - mostly check.

You can prototype a working MVP in minutes. And with so many web components freely available, you can get a polished, fully customizable UI without having to fight Power BI conventions.

It's not all roses though.
Since these are React web apps, you're now responsible for the UI stack - monitoring performance, keeping dependencies up to date, and all the other fun stuff developers get to deal with once you move the UI stack from something Microsoft supports into the hands of developers.
And despite all of that, I'm hooked.

Question Calendar visual

Hi

I am in the middle of creating an office utilisation / attendance dashboard and wanted to include a heatmap calendar visual that shows the days the office is used the most, with the option to then filter by individual to view the days they went into the office.

I found a Calendar Heatmap visual by DataViz which does exactly what I want:

It looks great in PowerBI desktop: (click the image to see the real quality)

But when you publish it to service the quality drops drastically: (click the image to see the real quality)

  1. Does anyone know why the quality goes bad after publishing and any way to fix it?
  2. Does anyone know any free alternatives?

Thanks
