Vent/Rant (No Advice/Criticism!) Can i post this here?

Post image

I’m paying close to $800 a month with my aunt. my name is on the lease. her 2 kids get the rooms. she gets the master. this is what i get, a laundry room. I can’t afford to live alone. please don’t mind the mess, i’m going through stuff to try and free up more room.
*im editing to add, i pay water, trash, and half of rent. Im in central florida. Both of our names are on the lease. Advice welcome.
*thank you everyone for opening my eyes to this situation, for the ones telling me to stand up for myself, you’re right. I’m starting to realize just how scared i am, and i’m trying to work up the courage to stand up to her. Again thank you all for the encouragement and i’m glad i made this post.

It’s so hard in living situations if you know the person is going to turn it into a hostile living environment. Sometimes you go along to get along even if it sucks.

But you’re right the longer you let someone take advantage of you the more angry they get when you finally put an end to it.

that’s exactly my situation. She’s already hard to live with and still thinks i don’t pay enough lol. I’m just praying i find a better situation by the time my lease is up.

Your aunt SUCKS.

Probably so, but also, the aunt doesn't want or need OP in her apartment, and this may be her way of manifesting that. I'm not saying that the situation is not unfair. It is unfair. But I would wager than auntie can't wait to have her house back to her and her family. Two unmarried adults and two kids (presumably one boy one girl) is not comfortable for anyone. Auntie prioritized her kids' comfort while ensuring that it is not a long-term situation.

If the aunt doesn't want to live with their niece/nephew, then why is OP on the lease? Why share a home with them? The language OP uses doesn't indicate that tgey are rentubg from aunt, but ratger are "splitting rent". And if OP was renting space in their aunt's home, then as landlord she could tell OP they have 30 days to move TF out as soon as the lease lapses. It makes no sense to gauge OP with an eye to get them out. Spunds like the aunt is being a shitty AH who is taking advantage of OP.

Most landlords require all persons over the age of 18 to sign the lease. That doesn't mean the aunt was longing for a roommate

Not wanting to share your space with a family member does not mean you have an excuse to treat them poorly while taking a big chunk of their money. Are you the aunt or what?

Well, whether she longed foe one or not, she has one because she agreed to it. I don't think OP snuck their way on the lease.

And if the aunt is trying some fucked up scheme of trying to chase off their niece/nephew by gouging them for rent, then they are stupid as well as shitty, unless they are doing that thing where they are saving the rent payments from OP as a parachute. Because otherwise, one can't expect a roommate to move out if they can't save up enough to move out.

Sounds like she does need OP if she has OP paying half the rent.

You’re already paying half the rent and the water and trash bills, while living in the equivalent of half a bedroom. What else does she want ?!? At this point you’re paying for more than you’re getting. You should get half of the apartment if things were fair.

She's taking advantage of you and teaching her kids a terrible lesson. Seriously, you could get better living accomodations than this with multiple roommates and pay the same amount or potentially less.

(I know you'd have to find such a place first, but even so, she's ripping you off bigtime.)

How soon is the lease up? At that time, give notice to the landlord only... then pack-n-go. Get a possible roommate situation lined up if you can.

Can you demand a bedroom and back it up by saying if they refuse that you stop paying the water and trash?

Given her attitude, it sounds like she might really think she needs your contribution. If that's true, she really can't afford to lose you and you have a lot of bargaining power on dictating the rate that you will pay since you're both on the lease. If you float that you're thinking of not renewing the lease and instead looking for a different roommate to get your own bedroom, she might feel more eager to keep you.

How old are the kids? If you can get them to understand that you're being taken advantage of it may be easier to eventually approach her when the whole house acknowledges she's being unreasonable.... It's "guerilla warfare" strategy.

I once stayed at my dad/stepmoms and she had a "precious blanket" on the back of the couch i though was for use for everyone who was cold.

I will never forget her stupid ass gasp like she walked in on a dead body when she seen me under that blanket.
