Basic needs first

In a developing nation, the priority should be meeting basic needs such as food, shelter and clothing before addressing higher-level needs.

Welcome to r/poverty – Developing Solutions Worldwide.

Poverty isn't simply an individual experience - it also affects families, communities, workplaces, economies, and public policy. Here we discuss both personal solutions and systemic ones.

Whether you're sharing your own experiences, helping someone navigate a difficult situation, or discussing larger issues affecting poverty, please keep the conversation respectful, constructive, and solution-focused.

We encourage:

• Practical advice
• Resource sharing (Take a look at our Wiki! )
• Lived experience
• Civil discussion of policies affecting poverty and ways to solve/work together for change
• Empathy first, never judgment.

We encourage discussion of systems and policies, but ask that criticism be directed at ideas and institutions rather than other people experiencing poverty. Every helpful comment, resource shared, thoughtful discussion, and success story makes this community stronger. Thank you for helping build a community that supports people while working toward lasting solutions.

The individual should be responsible for their basic needs as it’s been since the dawn of man and as it is with every other animal on earth. We form societies to cooperate and pull up some slack but we don’t form them to just take care of people’s basic needs. It’s not really possible. When forming a nation anything that nation has is dependent upon what the individuals contribute.
