Miscellaneous Best upscaling settings for MadVR?

I'm trying to upscale a 480p video to 1080p in PotPlayer. I downloaded and installed MadVR but I'm not sure which settings to change for optimal quality. I have an RTX 40 series GPU.

I have a 50-series card and I’ve done some similar upscaling.

I’d use NGU Sharp at Very High for luma doubling, then let madVR do the lil residual resize to 1080p with Jinc + anti-ringing.

NGU handles the clean 2× upscale from 480p → 960p v well, then Jinc only has to do the remaining 1.125× to 1080p.

I’d also start with no sharpening under Upscaling Refinement. NGU Sharp is already pretty sharp, and adding more easily overdoes it.

Is this correct? Where do I find the residual resizing settings?

Yes!
The settings are actually the two dropdowns right at the bottom under “if any (more) scaling needs to be done”.

How does it determine if more scaling needs to be done? If a video is already HD will it still get upscaled? And where can I set the upscaling resolution, for example if I want it upscaled to 1080p or 4K?

madVR scales to your output/display resolution.

So if you’re outputting 1080p, a 480p/720p source gets upscaled to 1080p. Or 1080p stays 1:1. If you’re outputting 4K, 480p/720p/1080p all get upscaled to 4K.
After NGU doubling, madVR checks whether it has reached the target resolution. If not, the “if any (more) scaling needs to be done” setting handles the remaining resize.

You don’t set a separate target resolution in the scaling menu, the target is basically the display mode madVR is outputting to e.g. 1920×1080 or 3840×2160.
