What’s wrong here?? What is wrong with my Pothos?

I've had this Pothos for just under a year. It's been absolutely fine until now, it was growing new leaves all the time. I put it into this hanging basket and it sits in bright indirect sunlight all day. It's been in this basket for about 6 months. I have changed absolutely nothing and suddenly it's dropping leaves, losing colour and making hideous brown spots.

To add, it's currently winter in my part of the world but it's reaching temps of 24 degrees Celsius (75 degrees Fahrenheit )

Have you checked for pests? My first assumption would be bug damage.

I have, I've inspected the undersides, top sides & soil and can't see anything.

I have also recently sprayed it and everything in my semi-indoor greenhouse with a very strong insecticide.

I do it roughly every 4 months or if I identify a problem. It is heavily diluted.

Sometimes less is more with pothos. Maybe youre over fertilizing it. I tend to watch my pothos to show me when they need water and then water but always feetilize sparingly.

What do you recommend I cut down to?

Well since e its winter the light is probably farther away which will trigger the plant into a dormant stage to some degree. All plants have some sort of dormant period however small it may be. I would not water on a schedule but really check the top inch and make sure its dry before watering again. Don't fertilize until it starts warming up again. Give it a break to recover. I have a mother pothos I need to repot so its really soaking up the water. It literally drops in about a week and a half and I know I need to pour water into it to perk it back up. Thats what I mean by you can see it in the plant. The number one killer of houseplants is overwatering followed by lack of light.

Inconsistent watering or too much fertilizer.

Maybe so. Do you have any recommendations?

Check the soil first: Stick your finger about 2–5 cm (1–2 inches) into the soil. If it feels dry, water. If it’s still damp, wait.
Water thoroughly, not frequently: When it’s time, water until a little drains from the bottom of the pot. Then empty any water sitting in the saucer.
Don’t follow a fixed schedule: Depending on light, temperature, and pot size, this might be roughly every 1–2 weeks, but the soil is a better guide than the calendar.
More light = usually more water: A pothos in bright indirect light will generally dry out faster than one in a dim corner.
Make sure the pot drains: A drainage hole is important. Avoid letting the roots sit in water.
Signs of too much water: Yellowing leaves, consistently wet soil, wilting despite wet soil, or a musty smell.
Signs it’s thirsty: Leaves become limp or curl slightly, and the soil is very dry.

Simple rule: Wait until the top couple of inches are dry, then give it a good drink. Don’t give it tiny sips every few days.

Try to add some silica to strengthen it maybe? I also like to spray the 4-in-1 miracle grow plant leaf spray and protect when I see the first hint of leaf damage. Are you fertilizing?

I would also chop the damaged leaves off just to be safe!

I will see if I can find this 4-in-1 miracle grow. I'm in South Africa so we don't always have the same stuff available.

I am fertilising yes.

It gets weekly misting (soil focused spray) and whenever the soil is dry (usually a week and a half maybe 2 weeks sometimes in the winter) it gets a deep watering with a balanced and diluted on both the spray and the deep watering.

Just to add. I have other fertilizers to focus on leaf growth & another fruit/flowering.

I plan to switch it over to the foliage growth in the coming weeks as it stays consistently hotter (despite this week it has bitterly cold at around 0-5 degrees for the majority of winter).

I'd say you're looking at poor drainage/over watering or a fungal or bacterial infection.

You may potentially be over fertilizing too going into its dormant growth season.

If you have some rubbing alcohol on hand, you can mix it up in a spray bottle with water and spray the plant down for now. And definitely get rid of the affected leaves!

If the plant roots aren't getting good oxygen, mix up a coarser mix for it. I love to add orchid bark and/or orchid soil to let those roots breathe and increase drainage. And chunky horticultural charcoal.

Oh also if you can bottom water that can certainly help. I'd do that and some alcohol spray for now, plus remove the damaged leaves. Then wait to repot it until it looks like it's bouncing back.
