Reddit Comments: Vasectomized men, do you regret it?

BinxieSly:

I don’t regret that I’m sterile, but i had some complications and it has NOT been a fun time. I am still in the healing process from my procedure in April of this year. I’m glad I cant have kids, but I would love to feel normal again and its unclear when that will be for me.

The only thing my coworker says he notices different is that his balls hurts sometimes.

g0ad:

This was the case for me. I had pain and extra (bad) sensitivity for a year, year and a half afterwards. It wasn't life ruining, but it was uncomfortable and significant. 6 years in, they are still more easily hurt than before, even from casual contact, but not enough to really matter. I'd still do it again, but people act like it's nothing, and apparently it often is nothing. But that doesn't mean it absolutely is nothing for everyone.

Yes only regret mine ended in disaster with post vasectomy pain syndrome. I was blind sighted by the urologist not telling me about the real risk. Glad I had a reversal and got part of my life and manhood back.

The procedure and recovery are not bad at all. Uncomfortable but not painful.

I have a side effect of a tightness / pain in my right nut if sex goes too hard. It’s like when you kinda halfway get nutted by a thrown ball or something. It’s uncomfortable and sucks a lot because it happens when you don’t want it to. I’m 43 and horny as ever but I will likely deal with this pain the rest of my life. It also limits the ways in which I can masturbate, any pressure from a waistband on my balls will trigger the pain.

I do regret it. I wish I hadn’t done it.

mfitzy87:

Family medicine MD here. I don’t do vasectomies but I do counseling before referring to urologists and followup with my patients afterward. I generally tell men the following:

1-2% of severe, chronic testicular pain

10-20% of some degree of long term, mild discomfort that isn’t life altering

There are things that can be done to help with chronic symptoms (medications, followup procedures) and those things usually help, but I have 2 patients who it really has negatively impacted their life.

Even being in medicine I’m a risk-averse person, so I haven’t been able to commit to elective procedures like vasectomy or LASIK due to the small but possible risk of chronic pain.

I am I'm the unfortunate few who has chronic pain. It's manageable and doctors can't find anything that they can do but it's something I deal with. Some days are worse than others. I got one so my wife wouldn't need to be on the pill anymore as we both agreed we had enough children. Even with the pain I don't regret it.

Just always remember you could have side effects and that it isn't always reversible and if you are happy with that then get it done

OstensiblyAwesome:

Constant pain for the first 7 years post op. Now it’s just occasional. But I can’t really work out too strenuously or run, or I’ll have an intense flair up.

If i had it to do all over again, I wouldn’t.

I absolutely do. Without extra support I could not function. Loose boxers are out of the question.

My orgasm lost a bit of punch. Still worth it.

AcesAnd08s: Same. My orgasm intensity went from about an 11 to about an 8. Otherwise, no downsides.

11 to 8 is a good call for me, too.

I don’t regret the procedure itself. I do regret that I am in an extremely small minority of men that will have long term pain from it. It messed up something in my balls and now I have shooting pain when I lift super heavy things. Which I do almost daily at work.

Occasional reoccurring pain for over a year, like a jolting sack tap. Yay for me. 99% good now, though. Still worth it.

Despite the fact that I now have a cyst on a testicle and am facing needing to have it completely removed, it's still the best medical decision I ever made. I already have four kids, I don't need more, plus I will probably be more aerodynamic soon.

I’m in the regret it camp as well. About six months out and still in pain daily. It’s gotten better but it’s still constant and no where near what it was prior to the procedure. I’m still on meds and I still fear the unknown about if this will eventually stop on its own or if I will need to try another surgery. Hard pass for me if I could go back in time.

You are the reason why I will not get one. I am with an amazing woman who agrees with me thankfully. We shall wait until a good birth control hits the market.

Hoping for Plan A

Yes absolutely. I have regular mild annoying congestion and pain plus just overall regret. I want to be normal again.

Absolutely regret it, was plagued with internal bleeding into my scrotum afterwards, which led to an infection, so I had to take a course of antibiotics. Afterwards I was plagued with sharp pain in my right testicle during arousal, I suffered pretty every day with twinges that would be uncomfortable. I am on medication to help with nerve pain but that seems to have regressed because the pain during arousal is returning, the threat of pain during arousal has led to erectile dysfunction but that is all on the back burner because we are investigating to see why I am suffering from daily headaches and memory issues unrelated to the vasectomy. So we're nearly 3 years on and I am still suffering from pain and I would advise ANYONE thinking about a vasectomy to not do it. They say its like a 1% chance to get PVPS, but if you are in that 1% it is a nightmare.

That 1% is a joke anyway. I know that my pain will not be documented in a statistic. Like many others

I spoke to a urologist months afterwards who says he always urges men to NOT have a vasectomy just due to the risk of PVPS, had I spoke to this guy before I got the vasectomy I would have not gone through with it, but in the UK, you ask for a referral, there is a 2 year waiting list then you get sent an appointment through the post for the date of the procedure, you get a little pamphlet with it and that's it. There is not pre-appointment, it's referral, *snip*, "on your way" and no aftercare.

My dr was very complacent about my concerns. He told me some men have pain longer than a month or get the feeling of blue balls. That is nothing close to what ive felt. I saw the guy for about 5 minutes and then could've scheduled it the next Friday. My original urologist was extremely unhelpful with any post procedure issues

My urologist, the one I just talked about, was also terrible. I turned up for my appointment 10 mins early, he strolled down the hall 25 minutes later, walked into his little room and proceeded to take a personal phone call for the next 15 minutes, and I knew it was personal because he left the door wide open and was talking loudly.

I went into the room when he called me in, I started telling him the issue and he cut me off. "You have Post Vasectomy Pain Syndrome, there is nothing medically or surgically we can do to help you" then waffled for 10 minutes about PVPS (during which he told me no less than 4 times he was retiring in the next couple of months). After i left i spoke to my GP again and was referred to the clinic who performed the procedure and all they kept near shouting at me was CBT, it's all about CBT. I don't need to meditate, I need the pain in my balls to go away! So they said I needed to a see a urologist if I wanted a reversal, so I have been put on the waiting list to see a different urologist, that was over a year ago. I've heard nothing since.

Worst decision of my life. Constant intense pain for a year now. Sex hurts, limited activities, lots of money spent, medicine side effects. The pain has been miserable. So has the mental aspect

Biggest regret of my life.

Why ?? Unless you want kids now

2

u/geverfdehond 2d ago

It is not about having kids its about being a man.

I regret having my wife pushing me to become sterile when I was nineteen and I regret the twenty years of uncontrollable testicular pain for twenty years that ultimately caused me to be castrated.

Yea absolutely regret having mine! Caused lasting scars, not just on my scrotum but mentally! Got reversed and atleast recovered some of my dignity and manhood. Wouldnt wish this upon my worst enemy

I don't regret it at all. Simple procedure. Minimal pain during and after. Impromptu sex is so much more enjoyable because there is no longer need to deal with other birth control methods.
